About Tricia Hersey

I am Tricia. A poet, performance artist, activist, teacher, theologian, theater maker, resister, and connector. I have been experimenting with art as a tool for resistance for over 20 years. I love roll up your sleeves community building and believe in the power of spectacle and art interventions.

The Nap Ministry is my newest project. It started as an idea while in graduate school in 2015 and has been growing ever since. I am grateful. The Nap Ministry consists of three elements:

1. Collective Napping Experiences: Installing sacred spaces for the community to rest together. We have transformed yoga studios, conference rooms, parks, art studios, galleries and churches into nap spaces. We curate the experience with yoga mats, blankets, pillows, healing sounds, sleep altar and poetic meditations all guided by The Nap Bishop, Tricia Hersey. These are transformative and healing experiences. People wake up in tears, rejuvenated and open to the possibilities of rest as a form of resistance.

2. Workshops and Lectures: Education is key to the de-programming. Capitalism and white supremacy has created a system that views our bodies as human machines that attach our worth to how much we produce. Our souls are exhausted and many feel so much guilt and shame when it comes to centering rest as a healing tool. Our workshops are interactive and immersive experiences that blend text, writing and rest to create a teaching moment.

3. Performance Art Installations: I am a poet and performance artist. For the last 20 years, I have been experimenting with these mediums to create site-specific spectacles and one-woman shows that bring awareness to social justice issues. We are grounded by the art of ritual and develop durational performance art installations that examine the history of the commodification of black bodies, the history of labor and rest as a form of reparations.

All of these elements are created by me with a select group of volunteers giving their time to make things happen. This started as a calling and we are transitioning into a full movement.

Your support will help to support me in research and program development and will give me the opportunity to continue taking care of my own self-care.

Over 20,000 people are following us on Instagram and close to 4,000 on Facebook. This happened in literally 3 months and the demand on my time and energy has been great. The work will continue because of your financial support. If The Nap Ministry has touched you in any way, please consider becoming a supporter at any level.
