About

Hi, I'm Natalie. 👋🏽

You've all heard the trope of "The Struggling Artist." And I'm here to show you that you don't have to confirm that bias. How would I know? I run a full-time arts business and have recently held a successful solo-exhibition at a public gallery. It's certainly challenging, but my business is growing and I'd love to share the process with you.

I have overcome many mental, operational and industry-specific challenges to get here and now I'm ready to share my journey with you. I realised I am not alone in having these fears, doubts and questions. Now that I've solved some inevitable catch-22 dilemmas, I'm here to share them with you. My mission is to make it easier for you to confidently call yourself an artist, musician, dancer, actor, illustrator, designer or multitalented 'creative'.

I Graduated... Now What?
I studied Fine Art and Film Studies at university for five years and when I left I felt completely mad and clueless. I graduated on a total high, with amazing marks and head full of knowledge. The fall to rock bottom came with a huge shock. While all my friends were laying down the foundations of successful (paid!) careers, I felt like I was paddling upstream on a life-raft made from my university essays. And I was sinking. Fast.

Where was the magic carpet that was going to take me to ArtistLand where I could make all the work I wanted to and forget about the rest? Forget about the rent, the tax, the income, the expenses, the marketing... Well, it didn't exist.

The Real World
In the last three years, I have gone from being so depressed and anxious that I couldn't get out of bed, to running my own art and film business. I have gone from the embarrassment of not being able to pay for a bus fare to the pride of supporting myself purely on my business income. I have gone from almost never making art to now having an ambitious, contracted solo-show at a public gallery.

So if you're hiding under the literal or metaphorical covers, this community might help you to peek out and see that the fault doesn't really lie within you. You are not flawed for wanting to be an artist. Really, it's not you! It's the world. But here's the secret: the only way the world will change is by you changing it. The world needs you to create unique work and hold your head high in the process.

What's in store?
REAL TALK. Tough love. Tips, tricks. Motivation. Problem solving. Practical advice. Dos and don'ts. Pros and cons. Anecdotes. Real-time experiences and updates.

Real talk about: University, art coaching, grant applications, exhibitions, business etiquette, networking, studio set-up, productivity hacks, ways to reduce anxiety, marketing, social media, sustainability, conferences, tax, books, apps, competitions, interning, conceptual practice and also some practical artistic advice here and there.

Let's all break the starving artist stereotype and become #enviedartists instead.

Goals
$168 of $500 per month
1 Week of Income/ Month

USD$500 is around AUD$700 which would be one week my business didn't need to contract out work and could focus on building my show and bringing you better content.
