"The Daylight Here" (Alternate Version)

Heyo, I just recorded this song as my entry to NPR's Tiny Desk Contest. If you know what's good for you, you're already familiar with the version I recorded with Nataly Dawn for our band My Terrible Friend. It's one of my favorites that I've written, so I decided to roll with it for my Tiny Desk submission. If you don't know what a Tiny Desk Concert is, look it up on YouTube. You will see a bunch of performances by every band I like. The winner of this contest gets to do one of those, so I thought I'd throw my hat in the ring. Actually, that sounds too casual. Entering an NPR contest as an independent musician is more like trying to stuff a sombrero into a subway car that's already totally full of hats. So, you know. I thought I'd do that. Big Star Cover- "Thirteen"

I've loved this song since hearing Elliott Smith's version of it, which was prominently featured on a mix CD I got from a friend in 2007. (It was also on Elliott's album "New Moon," but I'd argue the mix CD was more significant.) I used to play it from time to time in my open mic days and it's never really gotten old, so I decided to lay it down over the weekend with some added guitar bits. Hope you like it, and thanks for yours ears, eyes, and interest as always. -Lauren

I Will Survive

The inside scoop: I was asked to cover 30 seconds of this song for a TV show, "We Are Men". They didn't use my version and the show ended up getting cancelled after 2 episodes. Coincidence? You decide ;) Anyways, not a song I probably would have covered otherwise but I decided to finish it and put it out into the world. Matt Good Nice! I borrowed a friends GoPro and shot an entire video with it - had to stick by daylight but it looked great :) really nice cameras.

Arcade Fire Cover

Heyo, Decided to roll with a newer classic this time around. It was supposed to be a super mellow cover, but I was having fun with some new toys, and it turned into something a little different. Stephen Mesa Wow, this is incredibly done! I have listened to it many many times now. You've totally done it justice. Side note: this may sound absurd, but my brand new son was super fussy and crying when I turned this on and it mesmerized him! Your music is so magical it soothes crying babies!

Senja Sepi di French Concession

Firstly, a dedication. This song is dedicated to my girlfriend Yin. She is patient with me and teaches me new things everyday. 

Secondly, an explanation. This song is imperfect. It's improvised with the thought of a main melody that appears, floats and reappears. It's connected by a melodic ideas and moods. This is the second of a series of songs recorded in Shanghai. In fact, this is the part of the next album, tentatively titled "Poskad Dari Shanghai". 


"Poskad Dari Shanghai" will be the 2nd album of 3 albums I plan to release this year. The first, "Poskad Dari Malaysia" was just released earlier this week on Tuesday. 

This is the second of five song that I recorded on Sunday, March 22 2015 in Shanghai. In a way, this is a continuation of my fascination with travel, places and people I met in my musical journey. It is in fact a musical travelogue. 


The structure is influenced deeply by my guitar lesson with jazz guitarist Wayne Krantz who taught me about the importance of rhythmic integrity. The melodic architecture is influenced by the music of Alex De Grassi.
