Hi! My name is Nathaniel Burney, and I make the Illlustrated Guide to Law webcomic. It's all about debunking myths and explaining complex ideas with a bunch of silly pictures. So far I've covered all of criminal law (stuff like entrapment, murder, conspiracy) and criminal procedure (search and seizure, confessions, etc.). Now I'm plugging away at Constitutional Law (all the hot-button social issues) and Terrorism (terrorism).

The comic's a lot of fun to create, but for me the best part is the "class participation" at the bottom of each page, where readers engage in fantastic discussions and debates. Although I write for a target audience of interested high school students, the comic's readership is wonderfully diverse—law students and librarians, philosophers and foresters, scientists and social workers—and they all contribute far more than I could on my own. The comic has gotten tons of praise from thinkers like Cory Doctorow and institutions like Harvard Law School, and was even included in a major exhibit of illustrated legal works throughout history!

By becoming a patron, you'll be playing a big role in keeping the comic going. This isn't my day job (though oh my god how awesome would that be), and the extra cash keeps the website running and and frees me up to put out the best work I can.

Patrons get various rewards, and I'm open to suggestions for other rewards you might like.

Thank you for your support, and keep on reading!

This is the high-rez, early access level. You'll get to see posts before they go live on the website, in their full 2800px resolution. That's right, you'll be free to wallow in FOUR TIMES the detail, and before anyone else in the world gets to see it!

The Jury
$25 or more per month

At trial, my job is to paint a picture of what happened for the jury. When you join this jury, I'll email you a custom digital doodle of any Illustrated Guide character you like, doing whatever you please.

Senior Partner
$100 or more per month

Fine. Boss me around. Pledge $100, and I'll create a high-resolution digital illustration of pretty much anything you want. Abraham Lincoln riding a grasshopper into battle? Sure! A bloodthirsty barbarian in love? No problem! Your imagination's the limit.

The Supreme Court
$500 or more per month

Join this elite group, and you can commission your own story line. I will write and illustrate an explainer comic on whatever topic you choose!

I work on this in my free time, so updates can be irregular and sometimes far apart. But with this many patrons, no matter what my schedule, you'll be sure to get an update every week.
