About

Hello from the team at Native Land Digital!

Whether you’re just finding Native Land or have been using the map and website since it’s creation in 2014, we hope you have learned more about the deeper history of land you live on, and perhaps a few other things, like how you can incorporate territory acknowledgements into your work, life or school projects.

Here we are, just over 5 years since we had our start, and we have some big ideas to keep growing - but we need your help.

In 2018, we became a registered not-for-profit organization. This huge step has allowed us to really grow as a small organization, and begin to establish our own governance structure based on Indigenous knowledges, and we’ve been able to tackle some major projects and enhancements to the Native-Land.ca map and associated projects. To move the organization forward and help us become an even better educational platform, we could really use some help with funding in order to continue expanding the map into other global regions and improve the current website along with our apps.

Our main mission is to continue to provide a free, open source platform that teaches people about the importance and visibility of Indigenous history around the world. We aim to connect people -- both Indigenous and non-Indigenous -- with each other, helping people talk about colonialism, share language revitalization tools, and much more. We currently provide education resources and booklets to teachers of all levels and we have big ideas as we move forward.

Our nonprofit is comprised of five Indigenous Board Members, and we have an Advisory Council of academics and professionals that support our work. We have three part-time employees right now, including our Executive Director, Research Assistant and Digital Communications Coordinator, and we will soon be joined by a new Research Director. We are also very appreciative of the host of volunteers that float in and out of the project.

Costs associated with general maintenance and improvement on the site requires about $1000.00 CAD a month in funding. This keeps our outreach, social media, research, and background logistical work (funding research, project management) underway. This funding keeps our apps alive and the website running smoothly.

But we would really love to be able to hire a full-time Research Director and have a little more stability in the organization as we grow. We are hoping that you will help us fundraise $50,000 that can be dedicated to staff costs and research.

We promise that with your support, at any tier level, you will see Native Land Digital develop in complexity and global coverage!

Other initiatives we are looking at developing through Patreon support are:
  • Regular Native-Land.ca community newsletters with latest territory updates and adjustments
  • Collaboration with other online mappers
  • Blog posts by Indigenous community members, activists and academics on subjects of Indigenous land
  • Adding Indigenous language translations throughout the website
  • Adding language pronunciations to names and areas
  • Enhanced territory acknowledgement generator in Indigenous languages
  • Expanding map to cover Asia, Europe, Africa
  • Upgraded app to help you track your travels across Indigenous lands
  • User participation in where we should map next
  • Internationalized website with translations into more languages. (Spanish, Portuguese, and more)
There are four tiers of support available, please choose the level that suits you best and know that we are so thankful for you playing such a huge role in our journey -- it means so much to us.

Many thanks,

The Native Land Team
