Hi! I'm a full-time independent game designer, self-publisher and freelance graphic artist. I've been designing, writing and self-publishing tabletop roleplaying games since 2006, and want to keep on doing it forever.

The Basics

This is a monthly subscription for people who want to support me in my ongoing game design process. For every finished game that makes it to polished, public release, there's a pile of ideas, sketches and playtest-ready design frameworks that had to be shelved.

This campaign also supports the game design podcast Design Games, by myself and Will Hindmarch. The podcast is free, ad-less and weekly due in large part to your support.

That's the skunkworks. Patrons get to come inside.

What You Get

Every month, I will be posting the inner workings of my process to this Patreon. That includes:
  • Ideas for new games
  • Supplementary work-in-progress for my existing games
  • Older pieces that have never seen the light of day
  • Playtest documents as they go through my internal revision process
  • Small one-off games and hacks
  • Drafts of essays and articles about game design and publishing from my perspective
  • Occasional backer-only Design Games podcast episodes
  • And whatever else!

It's part design journal, part Patron-participation, and part early bird access to all of my published work. All of this material will be posted as Patron-only updates and in the Patron-only G+ community.

All Patrons will get free digital copies of anything I release, before it goes public.

What I Get
Being an independent creator is financially and emotionally uncertain. Having a dollar amount per month that I can count on is a huge stress relief, both to my material needs and my state of mind. The more confident I can be, the more time I can put into getting better at game design and publishing cool things, and the less time I have to spend hustling for freelance work and pushing my existing catalog.

I Remember Your Patreon Being Different
This is true! I started this campaign in 2013 under a per-public-release model. Over the last two years I've released 3 games through Patreon: The Death of the Gilded Age, the World Wide Wrestling Beta Playtest, and Fate's Fickle Winds. While I am eternally grateful for that support, I've determined that the per-release model does not positively effect my output rate or the quality of my work.

My hope is that this subscription model will better enable me to do what I love while it continues to reward you, my amazing patrons, with insight into my process and the earliest of scoops on my projects.
