What is today Never Was started ten years ago as the blog The Gatehouse: your gateway to the world of dieselpunk and steampunk online. A lot has changed since then. Steampunk has gone mainstream. Dieselpunk is now recognized as a genre and a subculture in its own right. We have seen blogs and webzines come and go. The Gatehouse went through various iterations and for a couple of years published its own printable magazine, the Gatehouse Gazette.

Now it's time for the next chapter.

In February of this year, we (Hilde Heyvaert and Nick Ottens) relaunched The Gatehouse as Never Was. With a crisp new look and our own domain, we are upping our game. We want Never Was to be more of a magazine than a blog, with long-form stories about art, architecture, history and genre theory as well as the event, book and movie reviews long-time readers have come to expect of us. We hope to reach not only existing dieselpunk and steampunk enthusiasts, but readers who are interested in (alternate) history generally.

That means an investment on our part. Hosting the website is relatively cheap. The main investment is time -- to research, write, edit and promote stories.

Which is why we're here. Never Was has always been a hobby for us and always will be. But being able to earn some money from it would go a long way to justifying the time we put into the magazine, plus it would be enormously motivating to know that people value our work.

Both of us are freelancers. The more we can earn from writing for Never Was, the more we can write and the less time we need to spend on other projects.

Between us, we write about 75 percent of all the content on the website. We also occasionally receive contributions from a team of writers. Being able to pay them on a story basis would be a dream come true.

You're a pioneer! Ready to start the journey, but not diving in head first. That's very prudent and we are grateful for your support. Becoming an Æthernaut unlocks patron-only features, for example, participating in polls on what stories we should write next.
Sky Captain
$2 or more per month 0 patrons
Join the Flying Legion and take us to the skies! This is for those of you who have an extra dollar per month to spare.
Zeppelin Overlord
$10 or more per month 0 patrons
We don't actually have zeppelins for you to lord over (yet), but we would like to add your name to the thank-you section of our About page to show our appreciation for your patronage.
Goals
$0 of $40 per month
When we reach $40 per month, we'll be able to cover our operating costs.
