About Nicole Antoinette

Welcome to the home of honest conversations about... everything!

I'm Nicole Antoinette, and I bet you're here because:
  • Like me, you are obsessed with the question of "How do we close the gap between what we say we want and what we actually do?"
  • You want to belong to a community where the truth is told
  • You are way more interested in real conversations than superficial ones (even if those real conversations are hard or messy!)
  • You've been craving more openness, laughter, and self-reflection in your daily life—with folks who, like you, are just doing the best they can with what they have

I am craving all of that as well (so much!) and the mission behind my work is to make us all feel less alone.

Which is exactly what happens in this Patreon community. This is a warm and friendly space—truly one of the most supportive corners of the internet that you could possibly find. It's a community filled with people like me and you who share the values of honesty, resilience, justice, and joy. More than anything, it's a fun and comforting place to hang out, one with zero pressure to be anything other than your most real, most human self.

By joining us, you are helping to fund the creation of resources and gatherings that allow us all to have more honest conversations—both with ourselves and each other.

These offerings include:

  • PERSONAL ESSAYS
  • JOURNALING PROMPTS
  • LIVE WORKSHOPS & GATHERINGS
  • PODCAST INTERVIEWS
  • QUARTERLY BEHIND-THE-SCENES BIZ & MONEY REPORT (A transparent look at the financial side of my small business, including details about what I'm working on and implementing to grow my business in a way that's both financially sustainable and values-driven.)
  • OTHER FUN THINGS! (I am always experimenting with new ways we can come together to have honest conversations that make us laugh, think, and feel less alone.)

These offerings are 100% community-funded, and when you look over at our funding tiers you'll see that we do things pretty differently around here.

This community is built on an economic justice-oriented funding model—all tiers from $5 - $25 per month receive exactly the same content, and our purposeful sliding scale allows each community member to support from within their means.

I know this funding model is not the norm (although I wish it was!), and in the FAQ below you can read more about why I've made the choice to experiment with this model.

SLIDING SCALE FAQ

Note: Much of what you'll read below was inspired by Alexis J. Cunningfolk, whose detailed breakdowns of why and how to implement alternative payment models has greatly helped me to put my own anti-capitalist values into even deeper practice.

Why did you decide to use a sliding scale?

I have been self-employed for 10 years, and the core question I've asked myself at every step along this path is, "How can I make my work both financially sustainable for me AND financially accessible for others?"

So often we think it's an either/or, because capitalism teaches us that we should get the absolute most we can out of everything we do, and that charging "less than we're worth" (whatever that even means?!) is a failure. Instead, I am committed to building an anti-capitalist business, one that values sustainability, abundance, and reciprocity (while capitalism prioritizes growth at all costs, scarcity, and extraction).

Using a sliding scale for my Patreon community is one crucial way that I am practicing this value, because a sliding scale is a tool that allows for a product or service to be accessed at multiple price points based on the circumstances of the purchaser. This model tangibly acknowledges that financial resources are not (and should not be) the only determining factor in whether or not someone can access services or products.

What are the disadvantages of a sliding scale?

For the creator (that's me!) the main disadvantage of a sliding scale is that people will take advantage of it, which leads to me not being paid fairly. I do not believe that most folks mean to take advantage, but since there is such a taboo around talking about money (something I aim to confront in all of my work!) that also means that many of us have never unpacked and talked openly about our own class and class privilege.

For the client/consumer/community member (that's you!) the main disadvantage of a sliding scale is that it can feel stressful. We hardly ever need to decide for ourselves how much to pay for something—most of us are used to seeing a price and paying that price—and so having to evaluate our financial means and privileges and choose our own price can feel really daunting. More on that in the next question :)

How do I know where on the sliding scale I belong?

  • For all of the resources, gatherings, and community support I offer here, the $15-per-month tier is the actual cost. This tier is for folks who can comfortably meet all of their basic needs (food, housing, transportation, medical care), and who have expendable income to regularly purchase things like books, coffee shop treats, online streaming subscriptions, etc.
  • The $10 tier is for folks who are able to meet their basic needs with some expendable income, but for whom the full-price tier would be a sacrifice (not a hardship). I'll quote from Alexis J. Cunningfolk here, on the difference between the two: "If paying for a class, product, or service would be difficult, but not detrimental, it qualifies as a sacrifice. You might have to cut back on other spending in your life (such as going out to dinner, buying coffee, or a new outfit), but this will not have a long term harmful impact on your life. It is a sacred sacrifice in order to pursue something you are called to do. If, however, paying for a class, product, or service would lead to a harmful impact on your life, such as not being able to put food on the table, pay rent, or pay for your transportation to get to work, then you are dealing with hardship."
  • The $5 tier is for folks for whom paying full price for this work would be a hardship.
  • The $25 tier is our "pay it forward" tier, where the extra money you are paying helps to supplement the folks on the lower end of the scale. This money also goes toward the creation of future free and low-cost offerings—such as my quarterly reflection workbooks. Think of this tier as an opportunity to not only join this community (yay!), but to also support your fellow community members while you're at it (double yay!)
  • There's also a $50 tier, which includes snail mail treats! You'll get something fun in the mail from me each quarter.

Lastly, and most importantly, please know that this is a shame-free sliding scale. You are welcome here, exactly as you are, no matter what. The amount that you are able to pay does not determine your own value and worth, nor does it "mean" anything about my own value and the impact of what I offer. This sliding scale represents the clearest and most just vision I currently hold for my work, and I did not enter into this decision lightly. Trust that if I did not want to offer multiple price points, I wouldn't, and you can therefore feel lovingly supported in choosing the tier that is best for you.

Do I need to prove my income in order to qualify for a lower tier on the scale?

Absolutely not. This is an entirely honor-based system, built on trust. I trust you to be honest in your assessment of your economic reality, and I am so grateful to be collaborating with you to create a world that's filled with honest conversations—particularly conversations about money itself!

I can't wait to get to know you better once you've joined our community. I know that paying for this work is an investment, and I promise to do absolutely everything I can to ensure it's one that feels well worth it for you each and every month.

With love & solidarity,
Nicole
