About Julius-Cezar MacQuarie

Pledge for the Sleepless Bat

I opened a pledge to kickstart the making of a short documentary called the Sleepless Bat. The film carries a powerful social message about the problematic behind evening and night-time economy expansion that impact negatively the invisible lives of night workers that keep global cities going 24/7.

The film draft has been reviewed in 2016 by the screener and the main portfolio reviewer for the San Francisco International Film Festival:"The Sleepless Bat is a heart wrenching poem of survival in a callous world. Ali, the protagonist, cannot seem to escape the hopelessness of his life--even the act of finding a daytime job seems impossible to him. The themes of invisibility, immigration, sleep deprivation, poverty and survival are ubiquitous in today's nocturnal cities of the future. Ali however, seems to encounter all, at the same time. This short film isolates each of Ali's encounter in an effort to canvas the traps of his livelihood."

In Werner Herzog's inimitable way, this film reveals and "Ecstatic Truth" that just hits you emotionally.

However, this creative work is time-consuming and it requires finances. With patrons' pledges, creative time turns into concrete, real outcomes. Be one of those people, curious enough and willing to support NightSparks works in order to continue unveiling a part of the world that remains largely unseen, unheard .... practically invisible. I urge you that you make your pledge and change the destiny of a short documentary that I started in 2015, but I stopped in 2016 due to lack of funds. Pledge for The Sleepless Bat, and for the NIGHTWORK documentary podcast. Be my Patron!

"No film remains unfinished." - Werner Herzog, (MasterClass, 2016)

"No story is left behind." - NightSparks.

Who am I?

I am Julius-Cezar MacQuarie and I am an anthropologist. I received my PhD in Sociology and Social Anthropology from Central European University (CEU) where I am affiliated with the Centre for Policy Studies. As a former INTEGRIM Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions fellow, my doctoral research in (CEU) focused on cooperation in the contemporary capitalist regime that demands and depends on the invisibilised lives of bio-automaton migrants working round-the-clock. NightSparks of London was born out of my doctoral research.

What do I do?

I carried out multi-sited nocturnal ethnographies in Budapest, Istanbul, London, Milano and Sofia. I produced short films (‘Invisible Lives: Romanian Night Shift Workers in London’, UK, 2013) | ‘Nocturnal Lives: Day Sleepers’, UK, 2015) and podcasts (NightWorkPod, CEU Podcasts, Budapest, 2018) for research and teaching on issues related to migrants working the night shift. Watch the trailer of The Sleepless Bat.

Currently, I apply anthropological theory to case management and outreach practice with vulnerable women (migrant and non-migrant) patients in NHS, London. Other work in progress includes seminar tutoring on health policy issues, a couple of book chapters for collective volumes on the integration of migrants and use of visual methods in migration studies.

My credentials are testimony to my focus on the theme of inclusiveness of migrants in Europe, which in the wake of the 2008 economic crush and 2015 waves of migrants fleeing war and insecurity has become more reflective of the contrary: non-inclusiveness in rapidly changing European societies (and the world).

Let's shake the world gently, together with every story that comes alive on the screen.

Thank you for your generous support and patience.
