Who are You?

The Official Story:

N.J. Ember is a paranormal fiction author who loves to write stories about survival and triumph over adversity. Whether her characters are dealing with the paranormal or everyday life, she seeks to show that strength is not always about being superhuman or invulnerable. She enjoys anything with mystery, suspense and horror, so when she’s not writing you can find her watching shows like Orphan Black, Penny Dreadful and Sherlock. She currently lives in Michigan with her grandpa and a forever growing collection of books and Funko Pop! figures.

The Unofficial Story:

Hi, I’m Nadia. I write under the pen name of N.J. Ember. Nice to meet you.

I’m twenty-eight. I write creepy stories. I pursue things that I love. Part of that’s being an author and a poet. Part of that’s eating Mexican food. I’m a constant work in progress. I love learning new things. Sometimes I’m a college student (when I can afford it.)

Although, the first thing you’d probably notice about me if we met is my wheelchair. I’m disabled. Cerebral palsy. (Got questions? Just ask. Or Google it.) I think that’s a shame since my disability is probably the least interesting thing about me.

Why Are You on Patreon?

Peer pressure. I was curious about Patreon and how it worked. Also, I was excited about the possibility of meeting new, cool people like you.

But mostly? I want to continue doing what I love most: writing. And that might not be possible going forward without your support.

About the Free the Characters Project

The “Free the Characters Project” is my way of connecting with readers while raising funds to help with my impending editing costs and other publishing expenditures. Essentially, by becoming a Patreon your support is helping to free my characters and get their stories out into the world.
Here’s the deal:
  • I’m currently bedridden. I fell off my van’s lift and fractured my (lumbar) spine in three places. Apparently it’s a re-fracture because I wasn’t aware that I had fractured my spine the first time I fell off my lift.
  • So I can’t move or sit up.
  • Because of my insurance I’m not currently receiving any medical treatment.
  • The state of my health causes me to deal with lethargy on top of depression and anxiety. (So my writing output is slower.)
  • I’m on a fixed income, and after some serious financial struggles I’m slowly starting to get myself back to where I was.
But...
  • The editor I had (who was editing my work at a generous rate) will no longer be able to edit for me.
  • I need to get a new editor and be able to pay them.
  • The constant financial issues have stopped me from finishing my degree as well as publishing books.
  • All aspects of publishing costs money. I’m doing the best I can with what I have, but extra income would help me publish books faster and at better quality.

Why Should I Help?

Fair enough. We all have problems and we all struggle financially. The things I’m dealing with are a lot less compared to other people’s struggles.

But I’m not asking you to support me. I’m asking you to support my work. I’ll be posting writing at both entry levels (Plot Bunny and Fae) so you can judge for yourself whether or not it’s worth it. I’m asking you to work with me to help make my writing the best it can be. I’m asking you to please help me share my writing with the world. Let’s create something together.

I’ve made tiers with ideas that I believe are doable, but if you have suggestions please don’t hesitate to let me know. I've set my ultimate goal to $170 (which is about $150 after fees) because that's enough save up to get a book edited in six months. The editor I've spoken with has a rate of 0.007 cents per word (which is pretty standard.)  Anything more will be used to get the books edited quicker or for other publishing costs.
