About

I’m best known as a novelist and the world’s first Lit Idol. Really.

It's true. Several years ago I was crowned the world's first Lit Idol at the London Book Fair in the UK. Within days, I got a publishing deal with HarperCollinsCanada for my first novel, After Helen, before it was even finished. It went on to receive rave reviews in the US, Canada, and the British Isles. Heady stuff.

So if you're a Lit Idol, why do you need my support?

But here's the thing. Even after my big break, making money as a writer hasn't been easy. I write emotionally-intelligent stories that are, above all, good reads. I spend many hundreds of hours researching, writing, and rewriting each novel, but I don't get paid for any of that work until a publisher accepts the manuscript. And even then, I may only receive $1.60 for each paperback sold at a $20 cover price. To put that into perspective, a book that sells 5,000 copies in my home country of Canada is considered a bestseller. Let's just say that I'm not raking in the dough.

Publishing my own work isn't without its problems either. That involves me paying a professional editor and graphic artist to help me create a finished product that can go head-to-head with books put out by traditional publishing houses. It also means that I start out in a financial hole before the book goes to print. And after the printer / distributor takes its cut, I still may only make about $2 for each paperback sold online. (I've learned that readers of my work generally prefer books they can hold in their hands over e-books.)

What your support means

Despite these financial obstacles, I continue to write. I recently completed the manuscript for my third novel and am ramping up to do research on my fourth. Your pledge will help make my writing income more predictable, thus allowing me to carve out more time to complete my books so that I can get them out to you sooner.

Not familiar with my books?

Pop on over to my website if you'd like to see synopses and reviews of my books. You can order copies there, too.

(A note to my Canadian and international friends: because Patreon is a US-based platform, pledge amounts are in US dollars.)

Frequently Asked Questions

Wait, so how do I support you?
You support me by becoming a Patron right here on this page.

Can I stop contributing in the future if I can't afford it?
Absolutely! You can cancel or adjust your pledge amount for any reason at any time.

Do I have to pay in US Dollars?
No. Everything is shown in US dollars on my Patreon pages, but you may use any currency and it will be automatically converted.

Do I have to receive the benefits listed? What if I don't want to do anything but support you?
If all you want to do is support me, wow! That's terrific! Of course you don't have to receive the benefits listed. You can contribute at whatever level you like. When you become a patron, just indicate that you'd prefer not to receive benefits. And thank you!

What if I want to support more than the highest tier?
What now? Well, er, um, if you'd like to do that, you can simply write in whatever amount pleases you during the check-out process. And then I get weak in the knees.
Goals
$30 of $200 per month
I've already got a killer idea for my fourth novel. This will help me carve out time to do background research.
