Why is the channel called Now You See It?
I like the phrase "Now You See It" because of the multiple meanings.

First, there's "now you see it" as in, we explored how some cinematic idea, and it makes a little more sense. A "now you notice it" meaning.

Seconds, there's "now you see it," as a sort of command. Go out there and see for yourself.

Finally, it's the beginning of the common phrase "Now you see it, now you don't" which is usually reserved for something magical. And that's what film is: magical. But it's also a cruel irony because the title of the channel implies that sometimes you notice a pattern in movies, and sometimes not. Sometimes you see it, sometimes you don't. And it's true: movies don't follow a rulebook on how to convey an idea. But that doesn't mean movies are all chaos and they can't be analyzed. There's always something going on, some purpose.

My goal is to find those patterns and bring them to the surface.

Who are you and what do you do?
My name is Jack, and I'm a Computer Programmer in Richmond, VA. I studied film in college, and I've been making video essays for the past four years or so.

Video Essays About What?
Thematic techniques in film. I look at how certain techniques or symbols contribute to the overall theme of a film or for film in general. One of my very fun ones is on the meaning of Milk in movies.

And in later videos I've tried to mix it up a bit. One on Vampires, one on Dave Chappelle. No matter the topic, it's always still rooted in the same ideas -- how different thematic elements add to central ideas in movies.

Why Patreon?
I want a platform to engage with my fans more intimately than just YouTube, and it's such a great opportunity for me to stay financially stable enough to continue doing what I love. I currently also have a real job, which also makes this weird. I can't decide if I would ever do YouTube full-time. Either way, Patreon gives me flexibility, which is crucial to keeping the channel alive and active, especially if I have a job to worry about.

I heard you are doing a Patreon makeover?
Yes, I am! From now on (as of July 2018), I am going to engage with my Patreon supporters more. I want more tiers of benefits, benefits that people will enjoy and I will actually follow through on (my previous tiers weren't great). For example, the script tier is a new one for me. I make these huge, complicated, annoyingly large scripts that nobody ever sees except for me and the occasional co-writer. I think sharing them could be a fun, interesting way to let my followers see my process.

And I used to say my favorite movie was Juno. I think it's Bonnie and Clyde now. I'll probably make a video on it one day??

Thank you so much!
Jack

Here's an album of the movie screenshots I rotate through on my computer desktop (right now almost 60 photos). It will constantly get updated as I find more movie screenshots I like:

No ads. I absolutely hate them, but they keep me afloat right now.
