Hey Guys, if we haven’t met yet, my name is Amina and I’m the founder of Numawok Creative.

Background on My Current Writing Project:
I believe I got the idea for this story back in 2014 when I was still in college. It wasn’t until 2016, though, that I really made up my mind to write a complete manuscript.

It involves a fantasy world with a mixed-race female protagonist, an ailing king, a secret heir, what I hope to be a cool spin on the whole “chosen one” trope, and a lot of sketchy people doing sketchy things.

I had a difficult time getting to the finish line of this rough draft.

After several false starts, I finally finished a 102,631-word, bare-bones, plot-hole ridden rough draft last year. The first complete, novel-length draft I’ve ever written!

(I know it’s hard to believe that a 100K+ word story is “bare bones”, but if you were to read it, you’d know EXACTLY what I mean…it’s a hot mess. But it’s done!)

I did a developmental edit, which meant reading through everything and assembling a GIANT To-Do list of things to fix, change, improve, flesh out, etc.

Now, I’m focusing on preparing for a re-write.

Rough Blurb for "King Seeker":

Grethala (working name) is a nation where the ruler’s position is not inherited but bestowed by a god-like being.

With the waning health of the current king, a quiet yet industrious 17-year-old sculptor's daughter is chosen by the Maker (the god-like being) to be a "seeker": the person who must find the heir to the throne by way of a “gift”--an empathic bond.

After disaster strikes at a trading festival, the reluctant seeker must learn to use the bond to search quickly for the heir, all the while avoiding sketchy, power-seeking people with their own nefarious agendas.

I believe stories are powerful.

They can alter someone’s day. They can spark change in peoples’ lives. They can even cause ripples throughout an entire culture.

I write because I want to captivate the heart, kindle the intellect, and inspire healthy transformation...in ways both big and small.

I want my writing to be meaningful—to make an impact.

Actually doing this, however, is easier said than done.

You see, I’ve been writing since I was in elementary school, but it wasn’t until mid-2016 that I began to take my writing seriously.

I soon discovered that finishing a writing project is HARD. (I’d had an on-again, off-again relationship with the rough draft of my first novel for well over a year.)

I found myself stuck, confused, and discouraged. My frustration prompted me to figure out what I was really hoping to accomplish. I wanted to get to the bottom of why I want to write.

The idea for Numawok Creative bubbled up back in 2016 out the above vision for my own writing and my frustration with how difficult it is to turn that desire into a reality.

The whole process can be so overwhelming. And I wanted to use my own study, observations, reflections, and practice to help other writers along too.

Through my blog, I explore ways for writers to thrive and create stories that resonate in the hearts, minds, and lives of readers

And I use my own journey to fuel this exploration.

In sharing my experiences, I aim to help people grow not only as writers but as numawok creatives...

A numawok creative is intrinsically motivated by a sense of

  • noble purpose,
  • positive impact,
  • and a desire for lifelong growth and wellbeing

Numawok creatives study, explore, experiment and practice in order to create meaningful art that resonates with their audience while leading full, flourishing lives in the process.

Fast forward to 2018. That original spark gave rise to one more purpose for this site. It’s also serving as a HUGE leap of faith.

You see, most people tell their success stories from miles down the road after all their hard work pays off.

(Now here’s where the crazy comes in.)

If I may be so bold, I want to start telling the story now, when the destination is still far off; when success still looks like a distant mirage.

So, I’m putting my creative journey out here for the world—or you interested few who are still reading this—to see…as it happens; in faith that it’ll end up where I hope it does.

With the success of the vision I mentioned earlier: to captivate the heart, kindle the intellect, and inspire healthy transformation with my creative work.

…And hopefully make a living in the process. ;)

Since I graduated from college, in Dec 2015, I have been living with my parents and using my day job earnings to invest in my creative career.

Throughout 2016 and 2017, I focused on finishing my professional training as an audiobook narrator and then starting my narration career.

My first job led to a serious vocal injury, which initiated an isolated time of reflection during the fall of 2017 while I rested my voice.

After much prayer and angst and soul searching, I realized I needed to focus on my own writing.

I needed to write my own stories, not narrate other people’s.

Since then, I’ve rolled up my sleeves and finished a development edit of my Frankenstein's monster of a first draft (“King Seeker”). I’m in the thick of preparation for a major re-write.

And I’m almost done with the first draft of an unrelated novelette (with a bunch of other ideas on the back burner.)

I launched Numawok Creative in January of 2018.

I went from monthly to weekly posting. I’ve invested resources in learning more about blogging, indie publishing, and creative entrepreneurship. I’ve improved my graphic design skills. I’ve improved the website and honed my mission little by little.

I’ve gotten engaged in the vibrant Instagram writer community and I’ve been really active on Pinterest the last several months. (In fact, Pinterest is how many writers discover Numawok Creative.)

Hundreds of people have enjoyed my writing prompts. Others have found value in how I share inspiration from my writing journey and insights from my own process.

(Karlie, a member of my email community, let me know that because of my discovery draft series, she’s written more on her current project than ever before! So exciting!)

I’m not saying this to brag. I’m saying this to let you know that Numawok Creative has come a long way and it has made a difference.

But here’s the thing.

I’ve been supporting all of this with my day job. And I was using every scrap of time I could find to pull this whole thing off.

I found that I coudn't sustain the pace I was working at.
Not if I wanted to love my family and friends well, take care of myself, and leave enough space in my life for my creativity to breath…

Starting in May 2019, I put my Numawok Creative blog posts on hold and pretty much stopped interacting on social media.

I paused to figure out what a healthy pace looks like for me.

As I peeled back layer after layer and made myself do less and less and less, I realized just how much I had been doing. How hard I’d been pushing myself.

There’s a more detailed breakdown below of what running the weekly blog involved, but I was constantly working, working, working in every scrap of time I could find.

And that PLUS the demands of my day job, trying to stay connected with people I care about, and actually carving out time to work on my fiction…well, I was exhausted and always felt like I was failing at one thing or another.

It wasn't something I could sustain for the long run.

So I’ve been trying to find a win-win that allows me to run Numawok Creative and provide insights and inspiration for you from my own journey, but...

  • in a balanced way where I am able to stay healthy, nurture close relationships, give my creativity room to breath, and make steady progress on my fiction…
  • and where Numawok Creative can be self-sustaining from a financial standpoint.

The Solution?

I’m using Patreon to create a crazy-affordable membership community for
  • fellow writers who also want to explore ways to thrive and create stories that resonate AND
  • anyone else who believes in the world-changing power of stories and what I’m working to accomplish through Numawok Creative and through my writing.

**Scroll to the bottom (mobile) OR up and to the right (desktop) to check out the perks**

Keeping Numawok Creative running requires many expenses that come out to hundreds of dollars annually. Some of those expenses include:

  • website hosting
  • email service provider
  • social media tools
  • landing page service
  • file storage
  • and so on...

Running the blog requires things like:

  • Writing blog posts, newsletters, social media posts, website copy
  • SEO research and optimization (which basically means making my blog posts “findable” by people searching for the kind of things I’m publishing on search engines like Google and Pinterest)
  • Finding images and creating graphics
  • Formatting and scheduling blog posts
  • Scheduling social media posts
  • Admin
  • Trouble-shooting tech issues
  • Interacting with my email community & social media followers (Though this is one of MY FAVORITE parts of running the blog, it still takes a significant amount of time)
  • Website maintenance, etc

To do this on a weekly basis requires between 40 and 90 hours per month…which is why I've slowed that waaaaay down.

In fact, moving forward I am now:
(1) releasing blog posts over at Numawok Creative again, but ONLY when an insight bubbles up organically,
(2) maintaining my weekly-ish newsletter,
(3) publishing Behind-the-Scenes Posts on a monthly-ish basis via Patreon, and
(4) publishing Numawok Reflections on a monthly-ish via Patreon

Members joining to receive full-access to Numawok Reflections and/or Behind-the-Scenes posts (or joining just to show their belief and support) will help make Numawok Creative self-sustaining:

>> Reaching My Initial Goal will cover Numawok Creative's monthly expenses!

>> Reaching My Second Goal will cover 10 hours of my time per month (the current average for this less intense pace as of Sept 2019)…To clarify, this does not include any time spent on my fiction, just time spent on Numawok Creative.

**Scroll down (mobile) OR to the top, left of this page to see progress toward goals (desktop)**

Note: You will be charged for your first month's pledge upon entering your payment information and joining as a patron, THEN charged on the first day of every month thereafter. (Something to consider if you're becoming a patron toward the end of the month.)

$1 + / month: NUMAWOK REFLECTIONS audio recordings (full access)

Those who join at this level will receive voice recordings of me reflecting on different aspects of my writing journey.

I believe strongly that reflection is essential for thriving, for designing a life aligned with who you are at your core, and for making the biggest possible impact.

Writers can flourish by learning more about themselves, how they create, and how they integrate their writing and creative pursuits with the rest of their lives little by little.

So my hope for these Numawok Reflections is to give you insights and inspiration for coaxing out your stories, refining them, and releasing them into the world in a way that is healthy, fulfilling, and sustainable…as I figure out how to do that in my own life. ;)

**I don't have a set release schedule, but I'm aiming for monthly-ish. These recordings will be accessible to the public for the first 24 hours after publication. Afterward, they will be available EXCLUSIVELY to $1/month members. (Though samples may appear elsewhere)

$3 + / month:  BEHIND-THE-SCENES ACCESS (full access)

For those who want to see my creative process in action...

In addition to everything above, I will also give you a behind-the-scenes look at my works-in-progress:

  • my brainstorming
  • my project journaling
  • excerpts from drafts

It’s not always pretty, but the messy middle of the creative process rarely is.

I hope it will be interesting and informative…and even inspire your own creativity.

I hope that in being vulnerable and showing you what comes BEFORE a polished, finished product, you will be encouraged to continue the hard work of pursuing your own dreams.

**I don't have a release schedule for BTS posts either, but I'm aiming for monthly-ish. These posts will be accessible to the public for the first 24 hours after publication. Afterward, they will available EXCLUSIVELY to $3/month members. (Though portions of this content may appear in other forms later as samples.)

I could say more but this overview has already gone on for an eternity *facepalm*
:) If you have any questions about all this, please email me!

Thanks in advance for your support!
