I'm going to be writing horror stories. Horror stories of all kinds; standalone short stories, serialized fiction, maybe even a comic or two if I get enough funding and can rope celebrity Mistmare player Ivan Ulyanov into some collaborations. Horror about the human condition. Horror about the supernatural. Horror about the creeping, unknown terror that lurks just at the bottom of the stairs when you're off to get a drink in the middle of the night. Horror about middle-management and corporate workflow tools. Maybe. All sorts. It'll be fun. Ever since I was about six, I've wanted to terrify people. It's a noble goal, I think. People like being scared and I'm happy to oblige. I've always loved the horror genre, and always loved working in it.

Previously, I've written a bunch of short stories dotted around the place. Some you can find on my blog, and my favorites you can find in my first published novel, Bright Lights & Glass Houses. There's quite a lot there. I enjoyed writing that book. I also run a blog taking an irreverent look at giallo, extreme and obscure horror movies over on Sudden Scream, as well as covering horror video games and interactive horror in general.

Most of you reading this probably know me from my video game writing; Richard & AliceSepulchre, and the follow-up The Charnel House Trilogy. There are also at least THREE games we're hard at work on which haven't been revealed yet. Maybe if you keep an eye on my Patreon you'll get a sneak peek at those.

If you're not familiar with my past work, or you just fancy being a voyeur and reading my life story, here's something of a summary:
Originally I started out writing prose fiction; horrorand crime. I even finished a crime novel, and was in the process of shipping it around to agents when various medical funtimes got in the way. I retired the project for a bit and ended up finding myself writing about video games instead. This was great, for a while, but not something I wanted to do long-term. The next logical step was writingforvideo games, something I started doing in 2012, when I joined the studio Owl Cave of which I am now a partner. Our first game, Richard & Alice, came out in 2013 and received a fair amount of critical and fan acclaim. Richard & Alice is a mystery/crime story about two people who find themselves locked in a mysterious prison while a blizzard rages outside. Subsequently we released a free game, Sepulchre, which chronicles the adventures of one Doctor Harold Lang aboard a train where nothing's quite right. This was my first foray into writing true horror for video games, and it rekindled my love for the genre. We then re-released Sepulchre, bookended between two other games, Inhale and Exhale. These starred newcomer protagonist Alex Davenport, and people seemed to rather like them. I've also written a number of horror games using Twine, an interactive fiction tool, which I find to be a pretty exciting method of storytelling. The Prom King (and other stories) was my most popular. Be warned; it's majorly NSFW!

My writing career's been kind of haphazard, really. Switching from prose to critique to game scripts. Originally, my life plan was to write novels, find an agent, get published, etc. This was kind of scuppered by a severe spinal condition I suffered in my youth, which led to me requiring multiple reconstructive surgeries; surgeries which, due to the extremity of my condition, involved lengthy recovery times, metalwork, vertebrae removal, all sorts of exciting things. As such, it meant any concrete plans I had for a career were pretty much constantly changing or being disrupted. In the end I've just sort of rolled with it, adopting whichever type of writing suited. It has meant I haven't had much of an opportunity to go back to prose fiction though, and my aim is for this Patreon to allow that to change a bit; for me to be able to fund working on new short stories and novels while exploring a new method of distribution. I figure it'll be an interesting, fun experiment at least.

So! If you're looking for regular short (or long!) horror fiction then you've come to the right place. Pledge away! Enjoy the TERROR. I'll try and make them scary, I promise. Patreon backers will also be able to get sneak peeks at the various projects I'm working on, and if things go alright there may very well be a bit more multimedia content than just prose available to scare you.

If for some reason you love me a ludicrous amount and decide to patronize me for $500 a month, then first, wow, that's kinda dramatically unexpected. Secondly, I will write you a personal short horror story of 500 words minimum, to your specifications, every month you're a patreon. I'll also send you a surprise gift of a value no less than $50 every month. You're also entitled to all the rewards in the previous tiers, a signed digital print of adventure game legends Ben Chandler and Francisco Gonzalez, sneak previews of the games and prose fiction I'm working on (probably requiring an NDA, that's how special this is), and various social media statements claiming you are awesome. I'll also retweet you like once.
Goals
$19 of $50 per short story, comic, other horror fiction
When I feel like I've achieved a complete collection worthy of release, I'll package up each short story or piece of serialized fiction I've written and publish a digital ebook, the kind you can put on a KINDLE or an IPAD or a phone. The book will also contain an exclusive short story only available in the collected editions. All Patreon backers will receive a free copy of the ebook in the format of your choice.
