The Orc Zone is the dubious branding that Hazel and Therin Stapp use to encompass their creative projects! Welcome, welcome.

About Us

We are a queer couple living in the city of Woonsocket, RI with our toothless cat, Mowgli. We've been together for 10 years, and have been collaborating on building the world of Chel, which features in most of our podcasts, for almost all of that time. Podcasts (and whatever other creative projects we come up with) are what help us get through life in this world without it grinding us into scum under someone else's shoes. Usually. We definitely have scum days.

Therin is a reference librarian and writer - that's a term she's always wanted to use for herself, and now that she does podcasts, she doesn't feel like quite so much of a fraud about it. Librarianship is her calling, practically in the traditional sense, even though working the reference desk exposes everyday injustices that make her sad and angry. If you want her to blab for a while, give her a glass of whiskey and talk to her about the English language, digital content rights for libraries, or asexuality. She has her hands in a lot of projects other than the Orc Zone, including Roll Like a Girl and the Directory of Independent Audio Drama.

Hazel's day job is in a chip factory, and she hates it, which really is a shame. She likes to design new items and creatures for D&D games, even though Therin makes fun of her for making things too complex. There is nothing you could do that would make her blab for a while, but she loves Star Wars and tracking her reading on Goodreads, because statistics.

Our Shows

We will always release all of our shows for free! This isn't even a "side hustle" level of enterprise. We make these shows because it's what we want to do with our free time. Please feel free to subscribe to them with the RSS links below, and if you CAN throw a few dollars into the hat for hosting and storage, we appreciate it!

Interference 👭

Currently in a season break. Episodes on alternate Fridays (RSS)
A fantasy audio drama with a queer romance. It features queer actors and characters, and tells the story of an interplanar glitch that brings two women together, and their struggle to keep it that way. The second season is currently in pre-production, but we will keep you informed of how things are going!

Legends of Chel 🐲

New episode every Wednesday (RSS)
Legends of Chel is a D&D5e actual play podcast. In our first season, three villagers from the town of Bell's Run are sent on a quest to find a coven of hags and strike a deal with them that will save the town from starvation and destruction. If we were a little more pretentious, I would use language that compares it to The Odyssey, as they are continually diverted from their goal by various threats. (As I write this, we just hit 1000 downloads! Thanks so much for your support!)

Leaf Us Alone 🍵

Currently on hiatus - but keep an eye out for at least a few episodes this winter (RSS)
Leaf us alone is a 30-minute discussion of books and tea. We do not formally review anything—it is a casual, sometimes scattered talk about aspects of books that stand out to us, and ends in a rating of whether or not the book was "our cup of tea." The intention is to make reading a part of our routine, and to spend 30 uninterrupted minutes talking to each other.

Patron benefits💖

As a patron of the Orc Zone, you help us pay for very basic stuff: hosting is the priority, then storage, then like... feeding ourselves, and maybe being able to improve our recording equipment. In return, we let all of our patrons see some behind-the-scenes stuff.
  • Bonus mini-episodes of Interference between seasons. These may explore the characters past, things that happen between episodes, or just a topic that the girls want to discuss that doesn't really fit into a full episode.
  • Therin's session notes from Legends of Chel as episodes come out, or at least, when she can get to them. (They are pretty entertaining.)
  • Their name on the Wall of Heroes over at the Orc Zone website
We are trying to build a community up in here, so at the moment, these are the main pieces of content we can offer, and everyone gets them! However, if you're willing to chip in $5 or more per month, we are also happy to give you a shout out in an episode of whatever show you like.

Projects in the Works 🔨

These are the things that are in progress, listed in order of the amount of attention they're getting.

Interference Season 2 - scriptwriting

[Our current priority] At the end of season one, we had an interplanar crossing! Geneva and her team are here to learn more about Earth and (hopefully) take down Karithell and whatever else threatens it. Season 2 will be about learning more about the villains they face, and exploring what being together on Earth means for Jacq and Geneva's relationship. If anything. (WILL THEY KISS??? We don't know yet.)

Setting guide for Chel

We've been building up information about Chel for a decade, but have only had vague dreams about releasing it publicly until now. Therin is now working in her free time on organizing and updating that information to better match the world as she is played and throw off some of the trappings of old Pathfinder and D&D campaigns. This is currently in its earliest stages, but she will be bringing info to patrons in some of its drafty forms when she can, especially if the feeds are quiet.

Podcasts about being Trans and Ace

Both of us are working on queer-af podcasts, the Ace Audio Archive and the Trans Home Companion. Keep an eye out for them some time this year.
