About

My name is Miguel Merino, and I'm a musician, linguist and educator from the United States. I wear the various musical hats of drummer, producer and composer. My love of the lyre, the instrument you see above, began in 2009 when I moved to Egypt and very soon met several lyre players from Egypt and the Sudan.

I created my group OTAAK BAND to feature the lyre, and over the next 10+ years I've taken the lyre far outside the folkloric tradition and used it to create unique, contemporary sounds, releasing 3 albums and playing many concerts.

LYRIZM is my whole world of studying, playing, researching, recording and documenting the lyre. I plan to visit every country where lyres are played: all of East Africa and around the Red Sea, to record and learn from the masters, and continue to compose my own lyre music. I am excited to begin this journey and I want you to come with me. Become a patron to support cultural preservation and a dedicated artist.

"La Traición del Tiempo," a Spanish adaptation of "Dunya al-Ushaq," the title track from Otaak Band's recent album with Ali al-Abady, will be going live on all digital platforms on NOVEMBER 20. There is a marvelous video for this song, performed live in the studio with some amazing musicians in Madrid, release date TBA. Become a patron for an exclusive screening of the video!
