About Otaak Band

Otaak Band is an ensemble dedicated to preserving folkloric music and traditions and propelling them into the future with lyres, drums and voices.

Otaak Band was founded in 2009 in Egypt by American musician, linguist and educator Miguel Merino. He is the pioneer in the use of the lyre as the versatile lead instrument in a contemporary group. Wearing the various musical hats of drummer, producer and composer, Miguel created Otaak Band to feature the lyre, and for 10+ years has taken this ancient instrument far outside the folkloric tradition and used it to create new and unique sounds over 3 albums and many concerts in Egypt, Sudan, Spain and the United States.

Otaak's mission has two major goals:
Along with lyre player Walid Abdou, Otaak Band is dedicated to studying, playing, researching, recording and documenting the lyre. We plan to visit every country where lyres are played: all of East Africa and around the Red Sea, to record and learn from the masters. This is a mammoth ethnographic project that will probably take the remainder of our lives.

On the other side, there is the band continuing to compose and perform and record our own music. Our dream is to see this group reach the highest level on the international circuit.

We are excited to begin this journey and want you to come with us.
Become a patron to support cultural preservation and help take the band to the next level. Your support means the band will be able to get travel, acquire necessary equipment, hire administrative help and much more.
