OUTCAST is creating a bimonthly lit mag of queer Midwestern writing and art

OUT/CAST is a journal of queer Midwestern fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and visual art. That means we review submissions from queer Midwesterners writing about anything, queer Midwesterners writing about queer and/or Midwestern stuff, non-queer and/or non-Midwesterners writing about queer and/or Midwestern stuff...or, really, any writing from anyone, as long as the work and its author respect what we're about.

Here's our most recent issue: http://outcastlit.us/issue-3/

We — that's Christine M. Hopkins and Thursday Simpson, your co-founding editors — started OUT/CAST because we saw the need for a space for people like us, queer Midwestern writers, in the greater lit mag-o-sphere. And from Day 1, we've been rewarded time and again with the opportunity and utter privilege to review and, eventually, publish so much incredible work that truly fulfills and furthers our vision.

Since we kicked things off in late May, we've put out three issues (here's where we'll clarify that "bimonthly" here means "every other month") and published work from 38 writers and artists. We also held a Pride Month-inspired contest and split the entry fees between our winner and Trans Lifeline, a hotline for trans people staffed by trans people.

Like most lit mag staff, we don't get paid, so we pay for everything out of pocket (minus sporadic income from tip jar submissions), which is why we're here. While we're happy to do the work we do here, we're also interested in one day becoming sustainable.

So! Here's what we have in mind — that is, how your monthly donation here on Patreon will help us keep making OUT/CAST even better:

  • Site upkeep - keeping our WordPress-hosted site up
  • Submittable - our submission management subscription
  • Paying our contributors - Something. At all. Would be just amazing. (We're on track to publish ~75 people a year, some multiple times per issue.)
  • Paying our editors and readers - Again, we're all volunteers.

Thank you for your continued support! It means the world knowing so many people see value in this project, and we hope to keep bringing it to you for years to come.
