About Oxford Poetry Library

Help us build a home for the library!

Oxford Poetry Library was founded in 2017 as a pedal-powered mobile poetry library aiming to be a free and open resource of poetry for readers of all backgrounds, tastes, and ages. We are a group of volunteers who believe that literature and poetry can enrich lives, build connections between people, and encourage new ways of looking at the world.

By bringing poetry into the local community, we want to introduce as many people as possible to the joys and benefits of reading poems, as well as nurture the existing community of writers and readers around the city.

We use poetry for social good

Over the last four years, we've carried our collection around the city in our trusty custom-built cargo bike, appearing at weekly farmer’s markets, fairs and festivals, and other community events. We collaborate regularly with other social impact groups - some projects include:

Why we need your support!

This year, we were invited to become part of an exciting initiative run by Meanwhile in Oxfordshire transforming a disused building in central Oxford into a mix of work space for social enterprises and meeting space for community groups. We will be setting up shop in this space, called 'The Community Works', in October 2021.

Having a physical space for the library will allow us to go further with our mission. It will help us be more widely accessible and discoverable to the local Oxford community. We'll be able to run more collaborative events and hope to evolve into a hub where people can build strong connections through reading and writing.

While we've survived on a shoe-string so far, we will need to pay £50 a month to pay for our spot in the physical space. We will also need funds to pay for initial set up costs (about £200) and then to help us to provide expenses for volunteer librarians (e.g. bus fares) so that anyone can be included. Any surplus funds raised will be spent in the same way we do today - on the upkeep of our existing collection, running local community events, and expanding the collection further.

Please help us take our mission further!

$60.49 - reached! per month
When we receive £50 a month, we will be able to pay our rent on the library space!
