About The Partial Historians

We discuss, spar, and laugh our way through the Roman world. We're both trained academics and value the important work of public outreach.

Our podcast will always be free to access, but if you value the work we do, we'd love your support.

Benefits of Supporting The Partial Historians

  • Your support makes it easier for us to keep working steadily on the podcast. This makes sure we have the time and funds to produce quality work with consistent release times.
  • Your help enables us to not only keep our website in top shape, but also improve it! Neither of us is a technical whizz -- its your help that real keeps the place looking swish and easy to enjoy.
  • Quality research takes time. With your backing, we're able to sneak away a little more often from the daily grind to work on our passion for your listening pleasure.
  • We're all about outreach. We want as many people as love history to be able to listen. By helping where you can, you make it easy for us to continue to serve the broader listening community.

What We Offer You

  • Insightful analysis of ancient source material - this is what we're trained to do and we love picking apart a good narrative source when we see it.
  • A good laugh. Let's face it, some people take their history very seriously. We take doing history seriously, but we find the foibles of humanity are often hilarious. If there's a better Roman name than Spurius Furius, we haven't found it yet!
  • A way into the ancient world informed by feminism. Ancient Rome is an amazing subject area, but in the world of podcasting, the topic is often covered by men. Now we quite like men, but gender does have a way of shaping both perspective and focus. We bring a fresh viewpoint to the subject.
  • We're not just interested in the ancient world either. We're both fascinated by how Rome has been understood over time. We examine the representation of Rome in film and popular culture to find out what we can learn about the connections between past and present.

Topics We Love

Join as we explore the eternal City in all her warts and glory. There's a number of topics close to our hearts that we'd love to have you along for the ride for, including:

  • The history of Rome from the founding of the City
  • Roman women and their roles in ancient society
  • Vesuvius and its consequences for Pompeii and Herculaneum
  • Roman emperors, their style of rule and their more intimate side
  • Spartacus: his life as a slave, gladiator, and rebel
  • The Vestal Virgins: the order, their rituals, and politics
