I'm Patrick, and I'm a videogame critic.

What this means is that I talk about games and game culture from an artistic, narrative, mechanical, or sociopolitical standpoint. I do this because I think games are important on a societal level, and not only can be talked about from these perspectives, but they should be. Games have incredible potential to inform, educate, and explore important and potentially difficult issues, and game criticism can and should play a role in the medium's development.

Some topics I like writing about:

  • Violence and its representation in games
  • Mental health in games
  • Narrative development and structure
  • Crowdfunding and its implications
  • Level design
  • Interplay between real-world and game-world spaces
  • Far Cry 2 and Doom (a lot of this) as design exemplars for the shooter genre
I'm largely interested in how games communicate, be it narratively, mechanically, or otherwise, as this presents the medium with its incredible capacity to explore new modes of thought.

Goals
$13 of $50 per Article
It's hard finding consistent paying work as a critic. At $50 a piece, I'll be making as much as I would freelancing, and will be able to continue to dedicate the time and energy to crafting high-quality pieces.
