About

For us, Patreon has two main functions: to provide a platform to create and share music and other content, and to offer a forum to build a more interactive community.

The commercial/creative landscape for musicians has dramatically changed in recent years. A streaming site like Spotify, for example, pays 0.003 cents per play of a song. That means that if you are an avid Paul Winter fan and listened to Paul’s Canyon album 1,000 times on Spotify—a total of 670 hours!—that would generate Paul $3.00.

Patreon makes it possible for audiences to support the idea of fairer compensation for artists, and also affirms the value of the creative process itself. It allows artists a chance to maintain the artistic independence and integrity they need in order to create the beauty they give to the world.

The concert landscape has also changed. The pandemic—and the climate crisis—make it harder now to bring the band to play in your hometown. Patreon offers new kinds of opportunities to build community around artists’ visions outside the mainstream, and a means to share the journey with audiences.

Our goal is to use Patreon as a place to share music and other content as we would on Facebook, Instagram and Bandcamp, making it accessible to all. Patreon goes above these separate platforms and will function as a hub, one place for all this content to come together. Click the “follow” button above this description, and you will be notified any time content is posted (if you are not already a member of Patreon, you will be asked to sign up for a free account). You do not need to make a contribution to do this.

You can also make a contribution towards supporting this work if you are inspired to do so. You can choose any of the above tiers or click the “set custom amount” button. Support at any level is gratefully accepted. If you contribute towards our ongoing work, you can become a more active member of our Patreon community, and will be able to interact with the content we post, and others in our Patreon community. It’s like a monthly subscription to one of your favorite media sources. You’ll be helping to cover the costs involved in creating new music, and to support our team of collaborators who are integral in the production and organization of our projects.

We are delighted that we have been able to offer our recent live stream events for free, and are deeply grateful for the messages of affirmation and donations that we have received, which continue to make that possible.

If you would like to give a one-time donation to Paul, you can do so via paypal at: https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/paultwinter

We invite you to join our community in any way that works for you. We are grateful for your support.

Paul Winter’s Vision
The World of Living Music is the musical umbrella for Paul’s ensemble, the Paul Winter Consort, and his community of colleagues. Living Music is also the record label Paul founded in 1980. The momentum to launch this came from a burgeoning wish-list of albums he dreamed of creating, the encouraging growth of an audience that not only listened, but cared about the Earth, and the accumulated frustration of experiences with large record companies. Living Music’s first production was Callings (in 1980): a celebration of the voices of the sea to awaken awareness about the plight of the oceans and marine mammals. No record company would have funded such a maverick album, but with the help of friends and a few environmental groups, Callings was produced, and Living Music was born. In the 40 years since then, he has produced 41 albums.

Concert tours and recording expeditions have taken Paul to 52 countries and six continents. He has performed hundreds of benefit concerts and used his compositions to serve environmental causes around the world. As artists-in-residence at New York’s Cathedral of St. John the Divine since 1980, Paul and the Consort have presented more than 200 unique and special events, including the annual Winter and Summer Solstice Celebrations, Carnival for the Rainforest, and the ecological mass, Missa Gaia/Earth Mass, which is performed each October as part of the Feast of St. Francis.

Paul was a pioneer of the world music genre. He thinks of his realm in the context of what he refers to as “Earth Music,” which celebrates the cultures and creatures of the Earth. Paul’s vision has been to create a catalogue of music that would embrace the vital traditions of music he reveres, from jazz, classical and world music traditions to the great symphony of nature. His music is often created and recorded in natural acoustic spaces to reflect the qualities and instincts brought into play by the environment.

Even after more than 50 albums, seven of which have been honored with Grammy awards, Paul still has a burgeoning wish-list of music to make, as well as a continuing strong belief in the power of music as a largely untapped resource for awakening heart and spirit, connecting people to a sense of place, and promoting relatedness to the larger community of life.
