For fourteen years, the book Physically Based Rendering: From Theory to Implementation has been an invaluable reference to the area of physically based rendering and the craft of implementing a state-of-the-art renderer. Key to the book is that it's a literate program, intertwined text and source code that thoroughly explain every step along the way. Over fifteen thousand copies of the printed book have been sold, over the course of three editions that have kept pace with the advances in the field.

Now, the full contents of the book are online, freely available to everyone. We've taken advantage of the capabilities of the Web, turning the numerous cross-references throughout the book into hyperlinks and making it possible to interactively browse and examine the details of high-resolution rendered images as you proceed through the book.

We plan to release an updated version of the book once a year, continuing to update it as the field advances, and adding more interactivity, where appropriate, to the reading experience.
