Hey there! About a year ago I curated the first Period Portraits event, where I interviewed young professionals about their periods and photographed empowering portraits to mark the moment. Since then, I've interviewed women in rural Ghana and refugees in Greece, and young Salvadorian and Ethiopian adolescents in Washington DC. Collecting these poetic stories and powerful images inspired me to launch a collaborative and empowering storytelling project aimed at breaking down the stigma of menstruation.

In addition to the interviews and portraits, I've started curating intimate workshops to explore menstrual mindfulness through yoga, hosted roundtable discussions to share stories and learn to build shame resilience, produced a video, and designed interactive events grounded in human-centered design to map the journey of menstruation experiences.

In all my experiences with Period Portraits there is always a beautiful moment when people share some of their deepest vulnerabilities - words that they may have never said out loud or shared before with a stranger. At the end, there is a communal sense of empowerment - because each person in the room realizes that they are not alone. The pride is palpable - and the feeling of relief is ubiquitous. When we join together to share something we've been told to hide most of our lives, and explore, in a safe and open space, authentic stories that were once shameful and stigmatizing - become truly powerful. This is my favorite part of Period Portraits.

In just one-year Period Portraits has:

-Interviewed and photographed over 75 people, spanning across 3 continents, ranging in age from 16 to 68 years old
-Curated 7 in-person community gatherings and menstrual health eduction workshops
-Gained over 1K Instagram followers
-Partnered and/or collaborated with numerous organizations, small businesses, etc.
-Received tremendous praise from menstrual health experts, gender activists, storytellers, and community builders
-Spoke and/or facilitated at -- GWU Milken School of Public Heath, Yale University's PeriodCon, UN Foundation, and the Menstrual Health Hub in Berlin

Some testimonials include:

"Thank you for creating this safe and open space! You made me think about my period experiences in such a unique way."

"I feel so connected to all the people in this room. You've inspired me to go home and have more vulnerable conversations about my body with my partner."

"It felt so powerful to share my period story. I haven't said those words out loud to anyone....EVER!"

To grow Period Portraits and continue to share authentic stories and create powerful spaces of connection, we need your support! This is where YOU can make a big impact. By donating today you will help end shame around periods, support innovative ways to tackle the stigmas around menstrual health and gender equity, and contribute to a social entrepreneur's journey (me!!).
