Periwinkle Cinema started as an underground monthly queer film series at the legendary big GAY warehouse in San Francisco in 2011. After a brief hiatus, it moved to Artists’ Television Access in San Francisco’s Mission District, where it has been presenting queer cinema every third Wednesday for the past 7 years. It is overseen by host Lorin Murphy and Gentry McShane plus volunteers from the SF Bay Area queer film community. We welcome guest-curators! Periwinkle features experimental film and video that doesn’t easily fit into the boxes of ‘homo-normative’ film programming or narrative restrictions, and work by artists under-represented within the LGBTQI community.

We take great pride in having showcased experimental film and video work by incredible creators from the SF Bay Area and emerging creators from around the world along-side work from such world-renowned filmmakers as: Marlon Riggs, GB Jones, Genesis Breyer P-Orridge, Bruce LaBruce, Hans Schierl, Zachary Drucker, Rhys Ernst, Silas Howard, Samara Halperin, Bob Mizer/Athletic Models Guild & many more!

In 2015, we produced Hanky-Code - The Movie - an anthology feature made up of 25 short films selected by Gentry McShane, Lisa Ganser & Lorin Murphy made by a diverse group of queer filmmakers from around the world. We're working on a few new projects, too, so, stay tuned!

We've partnered with Queer Cultural Center to produce and co-sponsor several shows as part of the annual Queer Arts Festival and for their monthly Creating Queer Community program, including the first exhibition of Bob Mizer's film and photography work in San Francisco at the Center for Sex and Culture in 2011, the world-premiere of Hanky-Code - The Movie in 2015, a special free screening of It Came From Kuchar in 2011 at the LGBTQ Community Center and more!
