About Peter Van Hoesen

Thanks for stopping by, nice to see that you are interested.

Why am I here?
Well, I have always felt relatively uncomfortable when providing content to social media platforms, music websites and other online outlets. The last ten to fifteen years I have cranked out a never ending stream of social media content, podcasts, interviews and other content formats. While it is certainly true that some of the online channels have helped me reach out to the world and connect with people it is also true that in the end, the owners of these channels are the main beneficiaries of my work and your attention (and consequently, your private data). I somehow feel as if we are all, partially, on the giving end of this relationship.

Another issue I have is that it never felt as if I had a real connection to my fans and supporters. Everything always remains somewhat transitory, without much depth or involvement beyond hitting a Like button. Call me old-fashioned, but I still like to have a real conversation which goes beyond a comment field on a social media post. Online communication can be valuable and rewarding, as long as there is a clear and honest connection.

As far as I can tell Patreon offers a possible answers to these issues. It is early day for me over here, and I surely do not know the ins and outs of this platform yet, but it does seem as if there are a couple of advantages for everyone involved.
First of all, the level of interaction seems more close-up. That is why I decided to make only the first tier accessible to everyone. The next three tiers are using limited access. This is because I want to build a closer relationship with the people who have been supporting me over the years. Limiting access seems like a first way to try this out. Secondly, I no longer feel as an unpaid content provider for Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. I will continue to use those platforms. However, the aim is to direct the high-value content to Patreon: new music, all kinds of content I want to share, the occasional rant, and of course everything related to new releases and project. Maybe even the odd mix. For the first time I can potentially receive a remuneration for this online work which takes up a lot of time. Seems like a good place to start, let's see where this takes us.

Thanks again for your interest and support in my channel. It will be an ongoing experiment, subject to change and evolution. I hope we can explore this together.

Musically yours,

Peter
