Photonwind is a one man (and dog) studio creating art and games.

I am William Ruhlig, a 31-year-old freelance artist, motion graphics designer, and indie game developer from Pretoria, South Africa. Grail is my partner-in-crime, a husky rescue, who keeps me company through all my work.

I studied and worked as an Information designer and I’m an accomplished illustrator and artist, having been a finalist and winner of several awards (Substance MeetMAT2, Design by Humans & BLIZZARD Diablo3 t-shirt contest (with two finalist entries), and Illustrators of the Future). I have also participated in several Game Jams and I received 3rd Place in the gm(48) #13.

As rewarding as it is participating in contests, what I’ve mainly decided to focus on is to follow my passions and work on something I’ve always wanted to be a part of – games – specifically Sci-Fi games. The game I’m working on at the moment is a project of passion, but rather than sit and dream about it I’ve decided to take the risk of time away from other work to dive right in and drag it into the real world. For the last few years, Photonwind is my little one-man (and dog) studio for this.

I’m creating an indie game about isolation on Mars (feels appropriate now, hey?) , following a single character as they experience the ups and downs of isolation on a planet. I wanted to create something expansive but simple, rooted in my passions and feelings. I hope to deliver something that will allow other people to experience and imagine brave new worlds and exciting adventures.

I’m somewhat of a perfectionist when it comes to my art, and I’m trying to create something near to a AAA quality gaming experience on a shoestring budget, but it takes time and motivation, and a lot of work. Having to take time off it to work on freelance projects and competitions really takes time away from working on the game. But now you can also be part of keeping me accountable so that I can keep creating… even when it gets hard! I don’t want to disappoint you, or myself.

To that end, I will be endeavouring to do regular streams and updates, as well as some fun gaming sessions and Q&A chats. Times are tough for freelance workers and anyone with no steady income. I’m really looking to grow a community of people excited about art, Sci-Fi, space, and games, and those willing to support the creation of all this work. Eventually my goal is to move into creating with more people, creating proper music, and working with additional programmers. I will also still be participating in other art contests, and producing other personal projects.

Any support would go a long way to making life more stable and less anxious. With your help I can put more focus on my game, and my other passions of creating (PLUS you can also help buy treats for Grail!).
