About Poet in the City

Poet in the City, like many other arts organisations in the UK, is still facing the ongoing threat brought on by the global Coronavirus pandemic. Becoming a Poetry Patron will help us to keep going, continue producing meaningful work, and supporting artists at this time PLUS you'll gain access to behind-the-scenes content from us and poetic content from our artistic community.

WHO WE ARE
Poet in the City connects people and places through poetry. We help places and people tell their stories, create access to ideas, attract radically new audiences, bring about social and behavioural change, and create awe-inspiring large-scale entertainment. From poetry in libraries to arts centres, car parks to community venues and festivals to music halls, we present poets who can enlarge our worlds through a programme of large-scale events and projects.

We have a small and ambitious staff team of 5, work with a network of freelancers and creatives across the country, and are supported by an amazing community of volunteers.

Last year alone we:
  • employed 150 artists
  • commissioned 12 new works of poetry
  • reached 8,000 live audience members
  • produced 42 live events
  • developed the careers of 32 young people

WHAT DO WE DO

We are mobilisers, facilitators and connectors. Through our projects working with communities, institutions, libraries and artists throughout England, we build new relationships, facilitate cultural infrastructure, and amplify traditionally underrepresented voices to strengthen ownership over our own cultural voice.

We train the next generation of creative producers through our programme Poet in the City Producers, working with talented young people to develop industry and leadership skills, and produce events, discussions and podcasts on issues which matter most.

“I have been enabled to entirely change media by my experiences with PinC Producers. I would never have had the courage otherwise, or the inspiration. Having joined the podcast team of Producers, I was then taken on as a part-time researcher by Economist … [this] has now led to my being taken on as an Assistant Producer for Economist Radio… It has been scary but so exciting, and has opened a whole new future for me. So really PinC has helped me change my life.” Producer

Poet in the City’s 2020 season Fail Better explores failure as a process and change as a necessary, ever-present facet of our lives. Our online Poetry Broadcast series explores new ways to connect poetry, ideas and audiences on a global scale in the digital world, using poetry as a means to combat the loneliness and isolation of COVID-19.

WHY BECOME A POETRY PATRON?
You will be helping us to deliver our vital programme of work across the country so we can:
  • continue supporting artists and freelancers with paid work and commissioning opportunities at a precarious time for the arts sector;
  • upskill and create access to creative careers for young people who have been disproportionately affected by the current unemployment crisis;
  • and provide meaningful opportunities for connection and creative expression in local communities when we need it the most.

Thank you!
PinC Team x
