What does Point North Media do?
Right now, I produce four ongoing podcasts, available through iTunes, Google Play, YouTube, and via the Point North Media website:
There And Back Again: An Exploration Of Tolkien's Middle-Earth is a long-running series dedicated to a close reading of the most important fantasy novels of all time, The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. What makes Tolkien's work distinctive? What is the timeless conflict at the heart of his fiction? Who is Tom Bombadil, and do balrogs really have wings? Find out as we travel from the Shire to the Lonely Mountain, from Rivendell to Mordor, and back again!
Dear Mr. Potter is an affectionate and enthusiastic analysis of JK Rowling's world-changing Harry Potter series. What is the story told by the Harry Potter series? How do adolescent adventures and adult fantasy interact on the page? What are we to make of muggles? Listen and find out!
Story And Star Wars is an in-depth study of the narrative heart of the most important pop culture phenomenon of the last fifty years. What is A New Hope really about? What does the prequel trilogy tell us about the Force? Why is Rey such an important character to the future of the Star Wars universe? Discover the answer to all these questions and more with Story And Star Wars!
Point North One-Shots are individual lectures, each of which covers a new movie, book or TV show. So far, we've covered topics as diverse as The Princess Bride, Casablanca, The NeverEnding Story and Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World, and there are many more to come -- including some topics selected by our most generous patrons!
Why "Point North Media"?
I named my company Point North Media because the compass metaphor is suggestive of both exploration and guidance, which are the principles which underpin my approach to the critical analysis of stories and storytelling. My aim is to make smart podcasts which engage and empower the listener, and to encourage the informed, critical discourse surrounding our favorite books, movies and TV shows.
