PokeNavBot is creating coordination tools for the Pokemon Go Community

PokeNav is a discord bot that helps build great Pokemon Go communities. Its goal is to provide a fully hosted, easy to learn interface that helps people organize in-game, become better players and a tighter community.

If you are here, you are probably considering becoming a Patron. If so, I greatly appreciate your consideration and support. Please allow me some time to help you make a decision:

Why Do I Need Patronage?

PokeNav is a fully hosted bot.

In other words, I make sure that the bot is running for everyone as often as it can be. It's not running on a gaming PC in my basement. It's running in a data center using state of the art software deployment techniques.

Operating this way increases reliability and performance but means there's some costs associated with running the bot on a monthly basis. Your patronage funds this going forward, so I can scale it to every community that wants it.

Reasons To Become A Patron

- You get to use the coolest features of PokeNav without worrying about limits
- Play with features before they are released generally, opportunity to help provide input and feedback and shape the way the bot is developed
- Patronage helps your fellow trainers by maintaining the free tier, which improves everyones experience with the bot.
PokeNav is powered by 100% renewable energy, thanks to Google Cloud Platform

The Story

In April 2017, I started a discord community in the suburbs outside of Philadelphia. Its purpose was to help people organize in game, coordinate taking gyms and announcing wild spawns. Over the next few months, it grew to a couple hundred people. When raids were announced, we coordinated using just discord channels and the relatively light activity was fine for our raid groups.

Then the summer of legendary raids happened. Our little server grew from just over 200, to well over 500. A couple days later -- 900, then 1200. Our coordination system was broken. Chaos ensued. Hundreds of people talking in a single channel, coordinating raids that were up to 25 minutes apart by car. There was talk of splitting up the community by town so people could organize better.

In July, I created the first version of what would eventually become PokeNav. Privately hosted for just my server, and it remained that way for the next 8 months. It allowed people to announce a raid, split off into a private channel, which other people could join with a simple reaction. It wasn't fancy, but it solved the coordination problem. As a result, our 1200 personal discord was able to raid together in local areas, and grow tighter as a community over the summer, discussing the game and sharing interests. We had meet ups and BBQs, merch sales, contests and competitions.

Ultimately I open sourced it but admittedly did not have time last year to maintain the project, nor to manage it for many servers. It was built specifically to keep my discord community together and help us organize, but by no means my ultimate vision of what it could become.

Now I have time and energy to turn this into what I knew it could always be: the best tool for growing Pokemon Go communities.

Language Localization:

At this level, I will bump up the language internationalization feature to a top priority. Meaning I will start the process for allowing PokeNav users to localize output of the bot for their own languages.
