Summary

This video is a duplicate of Video #97. Augusta wants to reinforce the importance of teaching all children how to decode words at high levels of fluency. With this repeat video, she again offers to parents and teachers, who may have missed this and other previous videos related to phonics, modeling of the use of her Highly Recurring Phonic Elements chart and fun home activities that reinforce these skills.

Check the Video Site Map for #64 and #69 and all other phonics videos for home and classroom lessons and practice.

Augusta begins by holding up a sign with the statistic of only 18% African American students were proficient in reading comprehension on the 1999 National Assessment of Educational Progress. She tells us that this is level of incompetence is ridiculous and that reading starts with decoding fluency after students know their consonant sounds.

In this short video Augusta reminds us of fun and meaningful activities that parents can do at home with their children to practice phonics, reading fluency and reading comprehension skills. She calls attention to two other videos (# 64 and #69) whose focus is on the use of product containers that are in the home to teach and practice phonics skills, using her Highly Recurring Phonic Elements Chart.

She shows us various products: Post Shredded Wheat cereal, Lysol disinfectant, plastic sandwich bags, blackeye peas, taco shells, frozen mac and cheese etc. Her main example is the Post Shredded Wheat box. Using only the information on the front of this cereal box, students practice and learn 13 of the Highly Recurring Phonic Elements and gain knowledge about weight and nutrition.

Of course, parents can use product containers that they have in the home and easily create exercises similar to this one. Augusta will make available as downloads the examples of student papers that she showed. She ends with the encouraging words for parents and teachers: “We can do this!”
