2019 SF/F/H short fiction market response rankings

Note: This market report is available free to the public. If you like my writings on genre issues, consider backing my Patreon.

Below are the submission response rates for professional-level science fiction, fantasy and horror short fiction markets. All data was collected from Submission Grinder in June 2019.

I only included markets which currently pay the SFWA professional rate of six cents a word (on September 1st of this year the rate rises to 8 cents a word). I also removed any markets which had fewer than 100 self-reported submissions recorded in Submission Grinder over the last 12 months.

Note the response times listed below are averages. This means that even though, for example, Asimov's Science Fiction has a two days average response on submissions and a 99.25% rejection rate, that doesn't mean your story was rejected just because you didn't hear anything in two days. According to Submission Grinder, when Asimov's accepts a story they take an average of 34 days to do so.

I also urge people to check out and use Submission Grinder. The site is an excellent source of information on markets across all genres. I regularly use the Grinder to research markets and track my own submissions.

Enjoy, and happy submitting.

No data was available for Amazing Stories because the publisher requested their listing be removed from Submission Grinder. In addition, pro-paying magazines such as Lightspeed and Nightmare were not included because they had under 100 self-reported submissions recorded in Submission Grinder (likely due to rarely having open submission calls). Finally, there are very good markets like Interzone and Black Static which weren't included because they don't currently pay pro rates.

Update: I've added the following information about Helios Quarterly, an excellent  science fiction, fantasy and horror magazine which won't open to submissions again until June 1, 2021. But with such a fast response rate authors should definitely keep them in mind for their next submission window.

  • Helios Quarterly Magazine, 3 days average response, 93.16% rejection rate, acceptances in an average of 8 days, 278 reported submissions over last 12 months.
