Anna finally got out of bed. Sunlight streamed over her. She lifted her face and closed her eyes.
In the distance, sirens sang and bombs shook the floor. She looked over the remains of the city. Smoke billowed skyward. Was that the historic courthouse? She used to feel sorrow at the loss of history, but years of war had numbed her.
Anna turned away. There was no past, nor future. Her only option was to survive the present.
