#5: Phonics - Segment 3 - Alphabet Letter Name Knowledge

Summary Statement
Phonics - Segment 3 - Alphabet Letter Name Knowledge
Small Group Lessons
The IA alphabet letter name recognition teaching strategies help low achieving students learn the names of alphabet letters in a short period of time. These direct teaching strategies supplement the rich and varied alphabet practice activities common in the classrooms of successful preschool, primary grade, and bilingual teachers.

Learning the names of the letters gives young students knowledge of one of the most common references in language and increases their critical observation of print around them. They will be able to say, “This word begins with the letter t.” “That word on the sign has two m’s.” “I can spell my name, M-a-l-c-o-l-m.”

The IA teaching sequence and the use of clues for each letter name increase students’ rate of learning and retention. Chalkboard and flash card drill are used to ensure quick mastery.
