Summary Statement
Phonics - Segment 5 - Highly Recurring Phonic Elements Chart and Recitation
Students who are significantly below standard in reading achievement need to quickly master a knowledge base and a process upon which they can call to become proficient in decoding large numbers of words art an accelerated pace.
The Highly Recurring Phonic Elements (HR Phonic Elements), a major component of this knowledge base, are a set of phonic patterns that occur with high frequency in the most common words in written material in English. With the consonant sounds, they are the foundation for all of the IA program’s word analysis components. The application of these patterns is practiced using the IA strategy Phonic Pattern Hopscotch.
After mastering the names of alphabet letters and all consonant sounds, students begin the study of the HR Phonic Elements. The IA program teachers these phonic elements through rhythmic recitation and continual reference to them as they occur in words that are introduced and studied in readers and content area textbooks.
Once students are taught the HR Phonic Elements, they quickly learn to read hundreds of words with various phonic patterns and syllables. When students who have a history of reading failure begin to achieve and sustain solid gains, both students and teachers acquire confidence in their skills and their ability to accelerate learning.
