In the fourth week of this 2019 UK mission in a variety of festivals in Wales and England, I visit Europe's largest gathering of Gypsies and Travelers. Here are my thoughts on the nomadic community and their most important event of the year. Fair Hill at Appleby is considered the one place many of the travelers truly feel that they have come home. They have been coming here since the late 1700s, and the small town of Appleby still hosts this event 250 years later.
Kristy and Dan Pattimore put me up in their home just outside appleby. They are both pioneer vicars for the Anglican Church.
Here is just a taster of an afternoon at the Appleby Horse Fair.
This is Billy Welch, the Shera Rom, or Head Gypsy, who organizes the Appleby Horse Fair. He is an amazingly gracious man who cares for his people, their struggles and their reputation in the world.
