To meet and discuss the White House’s fightback against antisemitism is the biggest statement yet of the ambition of my podcast series.
With thanks to Sgt. Benjamin Anthony of Our Soldiers Speak, I was given the opportunity to talk to US Special Envoy Elan Carr, whose personal and professional background give him the experience to take on this role within the Trump Administration.
The son of an Iraqi Jewish immigrant to the USA, Elan served in the US military during the campaign to topple Saddam Hussein. He even lit Chanukah candles to commemorate the Jewish Festival of Light and led Shabbat services in the Saddam’s palace.
This is a unique story and another example of America’s philosemitic culture - but with one caveat, the need for his job.
Elan monitors and combats anti-Jewish hate and 2019 has been the year of synagogue attacks in Pittsburgh and Poway.
I met him in the magnificent new surroundings of the US Embassy in Nine Elms, London.
