Alternative Teaching Strategies Needed
High levels of decoding and fluency skills, along with a rich academic vocabulary are necessary prerequisites for excellent reading comprehension. Many students in urban schools learn to decode very successfully using various phonics programs, but there are too many students for whom the traditional school programs have been ineffective. Mann’s Intensified Accelerated (IA) phonics teaching strategies offer alternative approaches for teachers, for parents, and for community groups that operate after-school and Saturday programs.
Intensified Accelerated Teaching Strategies
When teaching the IA phonics strategies, accelerated success for students occurs as they learn and begin to consistently apply the 56 Highly Recurring Phonic Elements on a chart, Phonic Pattern Hopscotch, Flash Cards for Fluency, and Phonic Pattern Word Lists to help them decode, practice, and retain the skills of fluent reading.
New IA Phonics List
With my new list: Fry’s 1,000 Most Common Words Categorized by Sixteen of Mann’s Highly Recurring Phonic Elements, I have taken a list of words familiar to most teachers and coupled them with my HR Phonic Elements to make Phonic Pattern Word Lists that can be used in lessons and practice sessions that supplement main reading programs. Successful teachers of students who traditionally underperform quickly teach all students these 1,000 words to mastery levels!
