The Body Mechanic

Are you a mechanic or at least take good care of your vehicle? What happens if you let the radiator run dry or the vehicle run without any oil in it? The engine will overheat or lock up and then you must replace the entire engine.

What happens when the body runs out of oil and water along with essential nutrients to keep it operating at pristine levels? The body seizes up and leads to heart attack, stroke, decreased immune system, free radicals taking over which leads to cancer, liver failure, heart attack and stroke. That’s not good at all. I took the bull by the horns, in the eighties and began to take care of my body better than I did my vehicle. Life changed for the better then. By the way, my first car was a brand new 1976 Camaro and it lasted me 15 years. When I sold it, it was in pristine condition.

Today, let’s talk about liver and immune system health and how to amend meds that can sometimes be destructive on the internal organs.

First and foremost, let’s maintain the heart, kidneys and liver. How can we nurture those essential organs in our bodies?

For me, I take to the vegetable garden, the sea and the farm.

Garlic is a wonder herb and I use it a lot, particularly in a broccoli casserole, garlic soup, gazpacho, lacto-fermentation and the fantastic pasta dishes. Coffee keeps my kidneys flushed along with my liver. Beets, either pickled, fresh or parboiled add another layer of protection and flavor. By the way, I love a good Borsch and Horseradish Beet spread for sammies. Yes, I am part Jewish and love a good mom and pop deli.

My menu for today includes foods that fine tune my body. Let’s analyze!

Oatmeal is a great leveler for cholesterol and good for maintaining blood pressure. I am hypertensive which a major issue. One egg has only 75 calories but 7 grams of high-quality protein, 5 grams of fat, and 1.6 grams of saturated fat, along with iron, vitamins, minerals, and carotenoids. The egg is a powerhouse of disease-fighting nutrients like lutein and zeaxanthin. The fruits for breakfast kick start my immune system and load the body with anti-oxidants to protect me throughout the day. In today’s world, that is essential. Bacon Is Fairly Nutritious, 37 grams of high-quality animal protein, Vitamins B1, B2, B3, B5, B6 and B12,89% of the RDA for selenium, 53% of the RDA for phosphorus, Decent amounts of the minerals iron, magnesium, zinc and potassium. Another interesting observation is the collagen in connective tissue in various meats can prevent osteoporosis. Coffee is for the traditional wake up and for liver health as it flushes toxins out of the body.

For lunch, another maintenance without all the calories; Whatever the ingredients, gazpacho is a healthy soup rich in minerals, antioxidants, fiber and in vitamins C, A and E. Red tomatoes, for example, are high in carotenoids such as lycopene and beta-carotene, antioxidants that can prevent prostate cancer, high blood pressure and eye problems (Source Slap Shop). The salmon energizes and feeds the body system with essential minerals, Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium, Sodium, Zinc, Copper, Manganese, Selenium. A single small Kosher dill pickle contains only 5 calories, most of which come from carbohydrates. ... The main sugar in the pickle is glucose, with the rest coming from fructose.

For Dinner, following through on a delicious day of fine dining. By the way, everything on my menu, I make. That’s the Kitchen Zen for me.  The Okra is essential for me to have a nice, relaxing evening, Okra is low in Saturated Fat and Sodium, and very low in Cholesterol. It is also a good source of Protein, Riboflavin, Niacin, Phosphorus, Potassium, Zinc and Copper, and a very good source of Dietary Fiber, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin K, Thiamin, Vitamin B6, Folate, Calcium, Magnesium and Manganese. Coupled with 2 tablespoons of butter after a quick blanching, the fats in the butter just taste good! The Baked Potato with Vinegar has sanity in the madness. Back in the day, 1970’s, I met a Cardiologist that would come into the restaurant was waiting tables and order the same thing every time, Beef Filet cooked rare, Baked Potato with Vinegar. The Vinegar acts as a blood cleanser of sorts and it is quite good on the potato. The Beet Juice is something I do daily. It cleanses the blood of toxins and is full of vitamins and nutrients.

This is the way I plan my day, nutrition wise. Throw in a beer or martini in the evening and I sleep well.

Mangiare felice! Ciao!
