New Genki Content & Sentence Practice ๐ŸŽ‰

Hello everyone! Today I bring you two major updates, that have opened the door to much more Japanese learning content. The first update is the Supplementary Genki Practice page:

On this page, you will find a list of every lesson and sub-lesson provided in the Genki textbook. When the page is complete, each sub-lesson will link to a practice page that will help you review the content of that lesson. ย ย I will make a post here with each lesson update. Lessons should be added daily or every few days, so keep checking back!

Much of this new content wouldn't be possible without the addition of a new type of tool, the Sentence Practice page:

This type of page gives you sentences based on a currently Genki lesson (like you would find in the Genki workbook) and asks you for a Japanese translation. The input accepts a mix of kana and kanji, and you are free to use the IME of your choice along with the automatic kana input.

One of the challenges of creating this tool was dealing with variations in translations. Obviously there isn't one perfect translation for each English sentence, so something had to be done to handle this type of situation. The tool works in the background by breaking down each sentence into parts and creating a list of every possible sentence answer. It then compares your provided answer (incorrect or not) to each of the sentences in the list of possible sentences and chooses the answer that matches the closest to your answer. This should provide you with some freedom to do things like use kanji or kana, use ใ›ใ‚“ใ“ใ† or ใ›ใ‚“ใ‚‚ใ‚“, or ใงใ™ or ใ  and still have your answer correctly assessed.

When you submit your answer, you are provided some helpful feedback:

Here's a somewhat exaggerated example of an incorrect answer. Parts marked in green are correct, parts marked in red and crossed out are incorrect, parts marked in grey need to be added, and parts marked in yellow are in the wrong part of the sentence. Reading the answer without the crossed out parts is the correct answer.

Using this tool, you can analyze your answer and see what you specifically need to work on. As this is a somewhat early release, this is likely to be improved a bit in the future.

Finally, the "Previous Answers" box keeps track of your previous answers during your study session, so you can look back on your mistakes:

Currently there is only one sentence practice page (X ใฏ Y ใงใ™), but many more are coming in the very near future!

As for one final extra update, Dark Mode has been improved a lot. If you were having issues with it before, try it again now!

As always, let me know what you think and what you would like to see! If there are any Genki lessons you would like to see before others, let me know that also! Otherwise, I will mostly be adding them in order.

Thank you so much for the support! ย โคย
