Wouldn’t it be cool if Linux and Free Software content dominated the top positions on a video sharing platform?
I mean, it’s not a critical thing to achieve – life goes on just fine without hitting such a goal – but it would be fun to accomplish, just the same. Certainly some solid bragging rights.
Obviously achieving that on YouTube is straight out of the question – YouTube is too big, and the largest channels simply too mammoth to unseat. At this point in YouTube’s life, simply breaking into the top 500 channels is darn near impossible for any channel focusing on Linux (or Open Source, and related topics).
Luckily, for us, YouTube is not the only game in town.
Over the last year, I’ve watched as LBRY (an open source, decentralized video sharing platform) has grown significantly. While it’s certainly no where near the size of YouTube, the growth rate is significant.
And, here’s the kicker, as of right now “The Lunduke Show” is the number 3 channel on LBRY.
My good friend “The Linux Gamer” (aka Gardiner Bryant) is sitting right behind me as the 5th most subscribed channel on the platform.
Yeah. Two of the top five channels are focused on Linux and Free Software. How stinkin’ rad is that?
But, what if, we did something truly crazy… what if we held the top two spots? What if, as LBRY continues to grow – gaining more and more users – Linux-y content was king (at least for a while)?
Right now, “The Lunduke Show” on LBRY needs about 650 more subscribers to take the #1 spot. And “The Linux Gamer” needs about 1,200.
Let’s give it the old college try. I think it’s doable.
Here’s how you can help achieve this awesome (but a bit goofy) goal:
1) Go to LBRY.com. Download the LBRY client for whatever platform you like (Linux, Android, Windows, Mac).
3) Spread the word. Encourage other Linux-focused creators to create a LBRY channel (the more Open Source content, the better!) and give other Linux users the nudge to use LBRY for Linux-y content.
Wouldn’t it be cool if we could all go to a decentralized, DRM-free, Open Source platform (with a native Linux client) for all our Linux-oriented videos?
Yes. It would be extremely cool.
Because YouTube kinda stinks.
Note: There are other video platforms out there – such as PeerTube, BitChute, MediaGoblin, and many others. LBRY simply is the one that seems to be gaining the most traction, and is improving at the fastest rate. Doesn’t mean the others are bad at all, but LBRY is where I’m focusing at the moment.
