Spoiler Wednesday: Meteorological Edition

Gentle reader,

Hey folks! Sorry, I didn't get to writing up the Jewish magic stuff yet--I had an important day job call Tuesday afternoon, and my uncle called Monday, and I drove out to a local hospital to donate a few N95 masks I had, and and and.

I've also been working as much as I can on The Sea May Burn! I was only a few days late meeting my Ides of March goal for entering my handwritten revisions, and now I'm sorting out continuity and timeline stuff.

I do a spreadsheet with dates and days of the week for all my books (and I always mess up at least one big thing anyway, alas), but for this book I have to be extra careful about things like weather, sunset times, and phases of the moon--for several reasons but two big ones are that a lot of scenes happen at night, and the heroine has bad dreams in hot weather. Here's a sneak peek at a corner of my spreadsheet:

People tell me a lot that this kind of thing is overkill, and I understand why! But what they may not understand is that (1) if I don't write things down I don't remember them, full stop, and (2) it's way easier for me to research what the weather or sunrise times ACTUALLY were than to make up my own coherent system. THAT would inevitably lead to the sun setting at 4pm at Midsummer or the moon being full six weeks in a row!

I definitely owe Keith Tinkler a HUGE thank-you for sharing his transcribed weather tables with me for 1813! I also love MoonGiant.com which shows you phases of the moon in a very easy to read format, and TimeAndDate.com has super detailed historical sunrise/set data for London (which is off by a couple of minutes from Rye Bay, but worrying about that WOULD be overkill!).

Two more notes:

  • I am absolutely working on fl-ASH-fiction requests and should have Sara C's story coming very soon! It is too long for a comment tbh, so expect a separate post notification.
  • No promises because I do have a surprising number of WFH commitments from the day job and my editing gigs and also just....life, but if I posted more than once a week sometimes during the pandemic, would that be annoying, or nice?

Hang in there! Your week's half over. ♥

Yours, &c.,
