Welcome back to another #FriendlyFriday, where I tell you about my fabulous friends and the brilliant things they are up to!
I was so thrilled and surprised this week to find that I was one of this year's winners of the Jane Yolen Mid-List Author Grant along with Tanuja Desai Hidler! Now usually I use my #FriendlyFriday posts to introduce you to my friends, however, since I don't actually know Tanuja, I'm so excited to use this post as a chance to get to know her myself!
From her website bio I've learned that Tanuja is an award-winning author/singer-songwriter and innovator of the ‘booktrack’. She is the recipient of the 2015 South Asia Book Award (for Bombay Blues), the James Jones First Novel Fellowship, and the London Writers/Waterstones Award, and, like me, her short stories have been included in numerous anthologies.
What is a "booktrack" you ask? When We Were Twins, Desai Hidier’s album of original songs based on her novel, Born Confused, was featured in Wired Magazine for being the first-ever “booktrack.” How exciting is that?!
Are you ready to hear about her novels? First up we have Born Confused!
Dimple Lala doesn't know what to think. She's spent her whole life resisting her parents' traditions. But now she's turning seventeen and things are more complicated than ever. She's still recovering from a year-old break-up and her best friend isn't around the way she used to be. Then, to make matters worse, her parents arrange for her to meet a "suitable boy." Of course, it doesn't go well . . . until Dimple goes to a club and finds him spinning a magical web of words and music. Suddenly the suitable boy is suitable because of his sheer unsuitability. Complications ensue.
Dimple Lala thought that growing up would give her all the answers, but instead she has more questions than ever. Her boyfriend is distant, her classmates are predictable, and a blue mood has settled around the edges of everything she does.
Don't these both sound amazing?! I am definitely adding these to my TBR pile, and ordering my copies right now! You can order your copies HERE! Then make sure to stop by Tanuja's website to find out more about her, her writing, and more!
