It's been a challenging week...
Lots going on. But you knew that.
I hope you're all safe & healthy & keeping up to date on the health advisories.
Here's what's happening in my COMICS WORKSHOP school work:
COMICS WORKSHOP CANCELLATIONS
After thinking & reading & listening & talking things over & over ...
Clearly, obviously, I'm cancelling all my school residency dates for the rest of the month -- We'll see where things stand, come April.
As an artist in residency at public schools, my work involves going from one community to another, working in close contact with hundreds of students & teachers from one day to the next...
If any single one of those DAY 1 people has been exposed... I become a vector for exposing LOTS of other people in every other school/library/town I visit from DAY 2 onwards...
I was going to write some captions for that image, but I think it speaks for itself.
Once I drew that diagram, I knew I was suspending operations for a while.
I've been healthy so far --
Well, okay -- sniffling & coughing & sneezing along with all my students --
But WE JUST DON'T KNOW WHO'S CARRYING WHAT GERMS at this point.
(Insert furious rant about inadequate testing & incompetent government response here.)
So here we are.
My new professional motto:
"Stay away, stay healthy, keep drawing, & keep in touch."
Now, these school residencies makes up the bulk of my income.
I'm not sure what this means for the future.
Well, no -- I do know what this means:
Zero teaching income.
But fortunately I'm healthy (I think!) & I can keep drawing comics, & sharing them here while we all wait out the pandemic.
So I'll be okay...
& my thoughts turn to my students...
Now all those students I would've seen (above) are stuck @ home, too --
Which means we don't get to draw comics together in their classrooms.
~ BUT! ~
This also means we all have some extra time to draw more comics!
INDEPENDENT COMICS PROJECTS are a terrific, low-cost way for students to maintain & build skills during vacations & school closures.
During this unplanned unemployment, I'm going to GET TO WORK!
I have a bunch of comics ed. videos planned...
I'll post them on my website, & on this Patreon.
They will all be PUBLIC posts so everyone can use 'em -- students, teachers, &c.
(Please feel free to share them w/ your own circles!)
I'm also setting up more video conferencing options, since several of you have asked about that sort of thing over this winter. Seems like the time's right.
If you're interested in doing a regular check-in on a project / topic, let me know by comment or message...
More details to come.
I've set up a new "BETWEEN COMICS WORKSHOPS" page at my site;
I'll update there too as this strange new calendar develops:
Be well, all! Be careful!
Let me know how you're doing.
