Four Elven Characters for Torchbearer (preface)

One year and five months ago I posted two portraits (I made them) depicting my Torchbearer character, an elf ranger. It was fun to create my own rendition, but I'm not looking back with pride in the renderings.

Early in April, I chose to get portraits of four of my characters. It happens that all are elves, though not all are from Torchbearer games. I am going to make a few posts to describe these as Elf Rangers from Torchbearer using the rules as best I can to describe each of the four at level 1, level 4, and level 9. It is just an exercise in the process and the stories linked to each of the characters. In fact, most of this is fabricated, as I have not played these characters to high levels.

Oh, by the way, I had three artists from Fiverr commissioned to generate their own portrayal of the character based on a brief bio and notes about the colors. I had a bit of boredom money to spend on this project, and I felt having hired artists for portraits would go better than my own efforts.

The artists are (left to right)

I need to introduce each character in this post, and I'll give a more detailed biography in another post.

Aelar Elleid - the fire sorceress

level 1 | level 4 | level 9

As a daughter of elven nobility, and given strict training to uphold excellence in all endeavors, Aelar carries resentful feelings for her upbringing and caste among elves. Yet, her naturally gifted performance with magic allowed additional relationships to grow, such as her mentor in pyromancy and a street circus troupe. Although she likes to dress in finery fit for a court, she carries spell components and other adventuring supplies, rations, or gear in belt pouches and carries a satchel for deeper delves.

With a band of scoundrels, she finds a tolerable group of partners to practice martial arts and monitor magical events outside of elven lands which could prove catastrophic. After a few disastrous skirmishes, she realizes leather armor will be better than blouses, corsets, and dresses; a fine dagger makes a utilitarian wand and serves as a deadly weapon in self-defense. Yet, she continues to wear finery with detailed embroidery and bears several trinkets of jewelry that remind her of a noble lineage.

Indus Monette - the illusionist

level 1 | level 4 | level 9

In a remote village where exports include wool and leather, Indus was born to enjoy the calm idyllic life near alpine climes. Indus found a love and talent for illusion and performance. Without a mentor for instruction, his parents suggested he should leave in search of magicians who can and will provide the guidance to become a master.

Indus left to a bustling crossroads to seek a mentor for his gift. He also carried a dagger for self-defense and other utilitarian camp needs. His first meeting with an adventuring band at a bustling market went poorly as he tried to haggle over buying some piece of kit but failed to get a discounted price. The adventurers, seeing an opportunity, invited him to join their band of pilgrims.

Indus continued wearing the fleece-lined cloak of his homeland and taken up wearing leather armor dyed black to better protect himself.

Nimbal Grosponte - the mage-knight

level 1 | level 4 | level 9

Hailing from a forlorn fortress defended by elves and dwarves, Nimbal is of a warrior lineage who protected ramparts against a bridge assault in an ancient era. With legends in his genealogy, Nimbal took up the knightly armor of his great-grandfather and set out in pursuit of a master and a quest to build his reputation and refine his warrior spirit. The ceremonial look of his armor and kit bears the regalia of his family's honorable deeds.

Finding the religious fortress stifling, Nimbal took up training with a mentor to learn spells to aid in combat. His gift for magic is limited. He is often distracted with tactics of battle or strategy for warfare; a few worthwhile spells strengthen his martial skill. He continues to wear the armor of his heritage; it is leather but stiffened with metallic paint to mimic the layered plates of a warlord while allowing superior flexibility and mobility.

Gabrielle Michelle - the warrior-sorceress

level 1 | level 4 | level 9

Gabrielle Michelle might carry a human name, but she hides an elven name and the royal claims behind it. Her parents were hunters and slayers of evil; she might take up that life as well in time. She was raised by her uncle in an elf home on the rolling prairies near a wide, shallow, flat-bottomed river; it was a remote village called Riverbend. She learned all she possibly could about the world beyond the village. The river drains from a northern land across the rolling prairies; it winds toward a southern land beyond the rolling prairies. The rolling prairies surround Riverbend in all directions with small groves of trees and shrubs. Although it is an idyllic place to grow up or grow old, it is a boring place to live through energetic years of youth. For elves, youth is a lengthy eon unless they leave home in search of adventure.

Gabrielle Michelle had no mentor to instruct her with a gift for magic or discipline for combat. Despite learning from her own errors, there is much to learn and many more faults to correct. She wears leather armor, carries a weapon when she can find it and prefers a backpack for hauling her delving gear. She is absent-minded about keeping up her kit with proper supplies, but never forgets to gather good rations.

Without parental guidance in her life, Gabrielle Michelle formed disassociated personalities to maintain her sense of the different identities she is constrained to uphold. Gabbie is a friendly, happy, and silly individual with high spirits about adventuring and never allows a bad result to get her down. Mischa is attentive to details, shows a mind for battle tactics and strategy for war or leadership, and keeps a stern stoicism about the state of an adventure. Ellie is a highbrow elven princess bound for social celebrity and refined culture; Ellie is the gifted sorceress bending luck to the benefit of herself and companions. The three minds work without noticing one another and keep her from feeling the overwhelm of her potential future self.

As a prairie ranger, she wears leather armor and wields a dagger or spear which are common to her upbringing. She wears a trinket from her parents depicting the elven constellation cluster said to be the source and destination of elven souls. Her cloak bears the emblems of the land, sea, and sky.
