Black On The Fouth Of July

Empathy

1. Have a conversation with an elder of your family and find out what your families everyday lives may have looked like during the early independence celebrations of America. Seek to find out if you are a descendant of a slave owning family line. Having this understanding will give you an illuminated positioning within your white privilege. (Note: even if you do not come from a slave owning lineage you are still very much existing within white privilege and benefitting from the racist structures of this country.)

2. Go through the speech by Frederick Douglas ans highliggt passages that are still very relevant to modern day issues of racism and consider the exhaustion of the black community fighting this generation after generation and then list out the ways YOU are going to show up more intently and intensively to be an accomplice to overturning these structures.

3. Take time to discuss with/explain to your children the TRUE history of America and how this is not a celebration for everyone.

ACTION

Do your research and find an organization local to you that supports the Black community. Ensure a few things: 1. It is run by Black people 2. It directly benefits members of the Black community with a large majority of its budget.
