Summary
In this 3rd video related to the human body and specifically the human brain, the focus is on accelerated culture-centered decoding and fluency lessons. Augusta shows a chart with one of the three “Essential Summaries” that students master related to the study of the human brain and the central nervous system. She shows us a list of eleven words that underperforming students will need lessons in decoding. The numerous sticky notes all over the chart of the text indicate all of the Highly Recurring Phonic Elements in those 11 words. Augusta emphasizes the end goal: all students will be able to fluently read this summary. (See attached summary.)
She then demonstrates the use of her strategy “Phonic Pattern Hopscotch” to teach students to phonetically analyze each of the 11 words. She stops at this point in this video and will need to continue to demonstrate the next strategies of “Three-Column Board Drill”, “Phonic Pattern Word Lists”, and “Flash Cards for Fluency”. She has previously demonstrated these strategies on quite a few videos. See the Site Map category “Phonics” Note: the demonstrations on videos #7-11 are the most complete because they are workshops with teachers. Video: #35: “Phonic Pattern Hopscotch”, #36: “Intensified Board Practice”, and videos #82 and #83.

The Human Brain and Nervous System “Essential Summaries”: #1, #2, #3.
