Mapping Out the Frontiers of Applied Statistics

In my conversation with Sam Livingstone,, we talked about the interplay between empirical and theoretical validation of algorithms and how the best work uses empirical investigations to extend theoretical results towards the algorithm/target distribution pairs of applied interest.

That bit of the conversation stuck with me and I started doodling exactly what that process might look like conceptually.  With the arrival of my new computer I took some time to TikZ those cartoons up into something more formal that I thought you might find useful.
