While I will always be the first to defend academia and intellectualism on the left, it is true that we need to reevaluate the means of subversion we use to communicate political and economic theory.
While leftist periodicals like Jacobin or Dissent are important because they offer alternatives to the capitalist mainstream narratives in other publications like The Atlantic or New Yorker, we will never reach people outside of our own circles until we diversify our concept of subversion and theory.
This is why content such as podcasts, tik toks, even memes are so important, but we must think even beyond these. One of the reasons I'm writing poetry again is because the left needs to broaden its reach and communication beyond the strictly theoretical and into means that are both accessible to working class people and which express creativity and culture. The more leftists we have taking up space and creating content the better, but especially creative content.
History has numerous examples where the arts have ignited the people, for better or worse. Stravinsky started a riot with classical music. Howl, a simple poem, was so controversial that trials were held to try to censor it. This is the power of the arts, this is the power that socialists need to seize.
The more we can utilize forward facing means to communicate our message the better. Until poetry, cinema, and art become tools for the left as well as our periodicals and theory, socialists will always just be a footnote in United States politics.
