Saturday, 3pm. The beautiful game is about to begin, but for photographers the game began a few hours ago. In this 45-min film Document Scotland photographers Jeremy Sutton-Hibbert and Colin McPherson are joined by Kenny Farquharson, journalist, commentator with The Times, and photographer, to discuss their approaches to photographing football culture in Scotland.
We hear from them as they discuss images from their respective projects, they talk of religion, of passion and rituals, of buying jackets to blend in amongst fans, and of looking for images before, during and after the games. The highs, the excitement, the crucial moments when the images will be found. Listen to them as they tell their little tips and secrets.
Kenny Farquharson supports Dundee United and show his black and white work shot since becoming a season-ticket owner; Jeremy Sutton-Hibbert looks for Manchester United's scores first in the newspapers, and shows his work from following Rangers FC through the Scottish 3rd Division; and Colin McPherson, season-ticket holder at Tranmere Rovers shows work from throughout his career from the stadia of Scotland and beyond.
Below, as a little souvenir, a match programme if you will, is a pdf of football work by Jeremy Sutton-Hibbert and Colin McPherson. Feel free to download it, enjoy the quotes, the images, and please share it widely amongst football fans you know.
