A UK-based website has re-issued a call for poems of remembrance in preparation for Remembrance Day, which takes place annually on November 11. Deadline is Oct. 31, 2020.
In the United States, November 11 is Veterans Day. Potential contributors are reminded the two holidays are slightly different in content and context.
As observed in England, Canada, Australia and other commonwealth countries, Remembrance Day commemorates the armistice that ended the First World War, as well as all those who have since died in uniformed service. In this, the holiday may be more comparable to Memorial Day, as observed the United States.
With its upcoming focus on Remembrance Day, editors at The Rainbow Poems are assembling their first-ever special section. The everyday mission of the volunteer-run on-line platform is "to bring together a community of people wanting to share, through creative writing, thoughts and feelings about uncertainty, change, trauma, grief, and reach towards acceptance, beauty, contentment."
The editors write:
We welcome your poetry based on lived experience of war or armed conflict and what comes after. We want your stories. We want to honour and appreciate all who have been affected, in whatever way, by man’s ability to wage war.
We particularly welcome work which discussed the mental health challenges associated with war and armed conflict. We aim to include a diverse range of viewpoints, leading us towards a more peaceful, empathetic future.
Submit up to three original and unpublished poems in a single word-processing file via Submittable here. Publication will take place in early November.
